Good morning, all!  I slept late, until 8:00.  I have to be home for UPS today, so my calendar is wide open.

I slept well.  there was one moment around 330 where my leg palpitations got really bad, but I mostly slept through the night.

This morning, I need to vacuum and tidy up.  I think I may actually begin this Appalachian Requiem for my dad.  I've done some scattered research, but I need to work on it seriously.

TCB, what is the name of your ship?

I've always wanted to go on a cruise, but there aren't any between Phoenix and Indiana, which is the only place we ever go.

Last night, I had two strange dreams, one I now vaguely remember, with two elderly British actresses like Margaret Rutherford and Edith Evans, the other was a Manhattan cabaret around 1982.  My composer friend and Drama Book Shop cohort Thom Heinrichs, who died from AIDS, was in the dream, along with someone like Rachel Ray, who was interviewing performers there. Some young man kept urging me to do a show and he would play piano for me.

I haven't thought about Thom in years.  He was a former protégé of Mr Sondheim's who had moved to Manhattan from Oklahoma or Texas.  He was the son of a wealthy physician who had disowned him for being gay after institutionalizing him and putting him through electroshock torture.  He was a very good composer and an even better friend, and I find typing this tears out my heart.  He wrote a couple of songs for our cabaret group "Just Good Friends," and I gave him the title for a show he was writing, "They Had Faces Then."  He made the ordeal of crazy employers much easier at the book shop, and it was he who got me my first orchestration work in Manhattan.

Around 1983 or so, he met an actor in the revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat with Laurie Beechman and Bill Hutton.  When Ken decided to leave acting for law school, they moved to L.A,  Ken died around 1986, and Thom's letters ended around 1990.

I have no idea what made me dream about him last night; perhaps it's so we do not forget?

Well, I found an obituary!  This is new, since the last time I looked for him online, I found nothing but a few posts on various sites.

Jane, yes, we will be getting off he ship.  We will probably have a taxi take us around for a bit.

We wish we had done that instead of a few of the tours on our last cruise.

Nice find.  Reading this one would never know the anguish his father inflicted on him.

The worst part of finding this obituary?  Discovering that someone you feared had died is actually dead.

Good morning, all. Happy Friday.

It's a half holiday here because of the Battle of Flowers parade that goes through downtown. Several hundred thousand people will be there, which is why all businesses downtown close at noon.

We have to work. All day.

Beautiful remembrance, Elmore. But I don't know that it's worse knowing your friend was dead. Somehow I'd actually think it was worse if you hadn't kept in touch and he'd been alive.

Friday morning greetings!  Taking it easy this morning after a busy afternoon and evening yesterday.  Wonder of wonders, the dinner at the Oakwood Club went smoothly and our book discussion at Jan's was lively and fun.  The 4 ladies who rode with me were very appreciative, as none of them had any idea where we were going.

DR Jane, as I suspected we talked a lot last night about our treasured cooking utensils (old and new) and about how we learned to cook.  An whether or not we're still interested in cooking...

TOD:
"Children of Eden" by Stephen Schwartz
We have season tickets for the Cabrillo Music Theater in Thousand Oaks so we were forced to see this show a week ago. When we got to our car afterwards, I noticed the show was only 10 minutes shorter than the "Mary Poppins" show Bruce and I both saw and commented was very long. I happen to kind of like this show however. And I like to familiarize myself with the music before I see a completely unfamiliar show and I found I really like the music (the CD is still in my stereo). It definitely has the Stephen Schwartz signature sound. All in all it's a decent flop show that has some pretty wonderful songs. "Stranger to the Rain" is particularly beautiful and could work nicely in a Kritzerland show someday...hint, hint.

Okay, I see yesterday turned into a discussion of mispronounced words. My pet peeves are saying com-para-ble (as it's spelled), instead of  pronouncing it com-pra-ble and saying jew-ler-y (as it's not spelled) instead of correctly pronouncing it jew-el-ry.

These things drive me especially crazy during the month of Feb-you-ary.
