I look forward to watching/listening to the Concerto in F video.  It's been a favorite piece since I was ten, and fortunately it's been blessed with any number of good recordings.  And yes, that's right up Slatkin's alley.  Didn't he and the St. Louis release an excellent Gershwin box set on Vox?

Yes, just checked.  Still have it.  It was all the works for piano and orchestra, with Jeffrey Siegel on piano.

A couple of the cast had rented a house near the campus with a huge backyard and the entire cast and crew had a big barbecue there then we went to the theatre and after the performance went back to the house and celebrated until we fell asleep. And then we got up in the morning( or early afternoon) and did  the whole thing again

Before it gets too hot, I need to move some plants around outside that are not doing well where they are. I figured it would be August before I had to do something with them but the raging heat started early this year.

That's a good one, DR vixmom.  Not to mention, a month long run of 1776! ?

What a great memory it all must be.

TOD - 40 years ago today, Middletown had a huge parade to celebrate the Bicentennial and the opening of our new city building.  Our community theatre had a fabulous float:

In 1980, I spent July 4th with college friend Peter Oberlink, who was then living in Hartford, CT.  Peter and his wife, who was a dancer in some ballet company, had split up, and I was visiting him on weekends and taking advantage of her ticket for things, like the Goodspeed production of The Happy Time or the Long Wharf production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.  We spent the morning exploring some natiobal park with a castle before we went to New Haven for a cookout by some Indian friends of his.  The husband was on the Yale faculty, and it was a wonderful meal of Indian and US food.

For the 1876 melodrama section of our float, DR Elmore dressed me as the heroine.  It was 40 years ago - where did my waistline go?

Nice pictures, DR Ginny.

What I mainly remember about the Bicentennial is watching specials on TV.

I remember the 1986 Statue of Liberty celebrations much more clearly, even though that, too, was a lot of TV watching.   :)

No idea, DR Elmore.  I just know I'm probably not going to roast a chicken for dinner, nor am I going to make my famous blueberry pie for dessert...

DR Vixmom, here's a recipe for a Blueberry-Dewberry pie. Dewberries are a type of blackberry. You can use your own choice of fruit in it. Pitted cherries, peaches, whatever goes well together.

Here's another. It says it's for raspberries, but use the combination you choose:

Thanks, DR ChasSmith.  Remember the "Bicentennial Minutes" that ran on (I think) CBS as a run-up to the actual event?

I remember watching the Statue of Liberty festivities while playing on the floor with 10-month-old "Robbie."

TOD: When I was 7, we went to visit family in Germany. On the Fourth of July, we were in Heidelberg and we watched the fireworks over the ruins of the castle. There was a large gathering and a few in the crowd starting making outrageous Oooohs and Aaaaahs for each firework that went off. We've done the same in our family ever since.
