I agree, very sad news about Cy Coleman.

I have a recording of him singing with Dorothy Fields, circa '72, dueting on numbers they wrote for Sweet Charity and See-Saw.  One of the tracks is a song that wasn't used for the latter show called "If There Were More People Like You."  I think I need to play it now.

I was right, that was the right song to play just now.

Very sad about Cy Coleman - he was guest performer with our local symphony in 1977 and was very gracious at the reception afterward.  I was going to NY the very next week and he made sure I knew how to get good seats for I Love My Wife, which had just opened.  The Santa combo singing "Hey There, Good Times," always cheers me up.

One of my favorite Cy Coleman songs is I Walk a Little Faster and it's about being alone in New York but ever optimistic that around the next corner will be the person you'll fall in love with.  It was once selected as the best song ever written about New York, even though there's no indication it's about New York in the main body of the song, just the tiny intro verse.

Today, with Coleman gone (and not possibly around the corner), I Walk a Little Slower

I know a couple of you said you might be willing to take over the formatting of our Unseemly Interviews.  The person who used to do that, Mr. Craig Brockman, has said it's not all that easy and that the person should have something called Dreamweaver software.  I don't know if that's downloadable or not, but I really would love someone to be able to do this - his other suggestion was to just put the interviews on our daily discussion board but for me that doesn't work at all.

First and foremost, Happy Birthday DR Jason.  Don't let life (or MTI) get you down.  Celebrate!  Life is a banquet...well, you know the rest.

But secondly, and just as important are the deaths of both Gregory Mitchell AND Cy Coleman.  The Dear Partner was always a HUGE Gregory Mitchell fan.

But Coleman.....  Favorite Coleman?  Hard to list them all, but certainly:

Witchcraft
Our Private World
Where Am I Going?
Welcome to Holiday Inn
You Wanna Bet?
Pink Taffeta...
The Best is Yet to Come

I am sure I will think of others

Civil disagreement is a wonderful thing.  Not only did I detect no testiness in DR Elmore's posts, it was hard for me to see how we'd disagreed.  From my point of view, the discussion went something like this:

N: Horses have four legs with very rare exceptions.

L: No, that can't be true.  I've seen a zebra, and it has four legs.

N: I'm not denying what you say about zebras.  I've only said that most horses have four legs.

L: What about goats?  Goats have four legs, I think.

N: We could name four-legged creatures until the cows come home.

L: Cows have four legs.

N: So do unicorns, but it doesn't have anything to do with the quantity of legs of horses.

L: It takes some time to figure out that just because stuff is printed in a book, doesn't mean it's true.

N: I give up.  I only ascertained horses had four legs by reading Gerald Bordman.  Forget that I've been to Belmont Park.

L: That's horse racing!

N: And on that we can agree.

Thinking over the Coleman canon, it's interesting that he did his best work in collaboration with female lyricists.  I think his best show was Sweet Charity (Dorothy Fields), but if one were to look at music and not all the other elements of the show, it might be On the 20th Century (Betty Comden & Adolph Green).  I think much of his best work was the early "pop" writing with Carolyn Leigh (You Fascinate Me So, A Doodlin' Song, Witchcraft, It Amazes Me, I Walk a Little Faster).  My least favorite Coleman scores are the ones he wrote with men, The Life, Barnum, I Love My Wife.  He wrote a brilliant song, You There in the Back Row, for a never-produced musical (Barbara Fried).  The exception to all this is City of Angels.  Wednesday my day included playing With Every Breath I Take and It's a Nice Face - and the gift those melodies give to the performer, just extraordinary.

Halvah?  Ain't that in a song from some Neil Simon show?

"Halvah! Halvah!
El mal Kamalvah!"

No?  Guess that was "Sharma, sharma, el mal kamarma" come to think of it.

I know I should feel sad or a sense of loss about Cy Coleman's passing, but I can't help thinking about all the wonderful songs he's given us over the years.  And then I start humming bits and pieces of the songs and the next thing I know I'm groovin' along.  Hard to feel bad when you have "Hey There, Good Times" going through your head.

I love City of Angels, On the Twentieth Century, Sweet Charity, etc., but I also have Cy's solo album, "It Started With A Dream."  It's just Cy singing and playing a piano with guests Tony Bennett and Lilias White.  It's absolutely delightful!

Second:

Cy Coleman was here at Hofstra for a conference on musical theatre a year and a half ago.  I had a horrible toothache that week and missed a lot.  I did, however, see Cy on two occasions.

He gave a "lecture", which was basically a bunch of wonderful remeniscences--stories about David Merrick and Carolyn Leigh, and everybody else.  He said that he eventually got fed up with working with Carolyn and was looking for a lyricist.  He met Dorothy Fields, the Great Dorothy Fields at a party, and with some trepidation approached the famous lady:  could she find time in her, presumably, busy schedule to work with him?  "Of course," she replied.  "You know, nobody ever asks any more."  Voilà Charity!

The next day I actually got Joe to shlep to campus with me to see "Cy Coleman and Friends" in the campus theatre.  Michelle Lee, Carollee Carmello, and others sang various Coleman songs, Cy did "I Never Met a Man I Didn't Like", and the Cy Coleman Trio did some jazz pieces.  The most amazing was "Three" from I Love My Wife as a jazz instrumental.  I never realized how terrific the music was to that song, always listening to the lyrics.

By the end of the evening I was thinking, "I really want to work with this man."  Now I'll never have the chance.  Somewhere I have a vinyl recording of him singing his own material.  But we don't have a turntable set up.
