"Florence Foster Jenkins" is quite an amazing film.  It's funny, Meryl Streep's singing or miming of someone else's performance, is spot on, and the cast is truly wonderful. Hugh Grant is really astonishing, and Simon Helberg of "The Big Bang" really boggled my mind as this quietly gay, mousey southern gentleman who goes fighting all the way to Carnegie Hall.  The three actors get all the laughs and never push the sadness behind the comedy.  It's quite often heartbreaking, and the ending is a killer.

Nina Arianda, whom I'd never seen before in anything. plays the proverbial dumb blonde with the hig heart, and there are wonderful cameos by a whole crew of amazing actors.  I suspect they are mainly British, ;ole John Sessions and Maggie Steed, but the impersonations of Carl Edwards of the Met and Arturo Toscanini are quite wonderful.  The design is really fine and the choreography of Hugh Grant's dance with Nina Arianda really jives.

Thank you for this excellent review.  The previews did not entice us.

Most of tomorrow will be spent on planes.  We are flying to Athens where we shall meet up with friends for an adventure.

The adventure was to end in Istanbul but, of course, that has been changed.

Thanks for the report, Larry.  I'd read that they had originally recorded all the songs in a studio, but when they went to film it, the director decided to have Meryl sing and Simon play live (he really can play the piano).  And so they filmed them performing live.  That's pretty cool.

Listening to some interesting music.  I really must jog at some point and yet I really don't feel like it.  But I shall nonetheless.

He actually played a keyboard on THE BIG BANG THEORY in a very sweet storyline about when Bernadette was sick and in the hospital on the anniversary of their first date.  Here's a link to YouTube:

Went on a run to the open Costco today. Got the parental units stocked up on the essentials, including toilet paper and Kleenex.

We watched a little of the Olympics tonight. This whole watching TV thing is strange to me after years of not watching.

BK, did you know that Criterion's November releases include One-Eyed Jacks. You still have the soundtrack available, right?

Arthur Hiller has died. I loved the original version of "The In-Laws." And, of course, he was responsible for "Love Story."

He also directed "The Americanization of Emily" and "The Hospital," two other movies I really enjoyed.

Oh dear Lord - what a crazy two hours I've just had.  My computer spared out, shut off, I could not restart - I called Apple Support and got some guy who really didn't know much, so he couldn't get anything working and made me an appointment for Friday.  Then on a hunch I called back and got someone who was smart and nice, and he had me do other stuff and we managed to get back on.  We were screen sharing when it shut down again.  So, we went into 'recovery' mode and tried to do a drive repair and it wouldn't do it, which means the drive is corrupt or going bad or whatever.  So, in it will go on Friday, although we did manage to get back to the desktop and I am working from there right now.  But smartly, I put my main folder onto an 8gig little memory thing so I can work from that on my MacBook Air if I have to.  Crazy stuff.  I asked if I should put it to sleep when I'm not working and he thought that was a good idea so that's what I'll do and hopefully it will be okay for a while.

The big laugh in the patter I wrote was Hayley saying, "I get asked to sing that song all the time, but I never have anyone to sing it with."  To which Richard replies, "What about the girl you sang it with in the movie?"  And Hayley beautifully timed a look to him - big laugh.

love it!!
