I do not care for much high fashion. I'm more concerned about comfortable, flattering, wearable clothes, especially for women. Men have always had sensible options. I do love menswear and have, at times, bought clothes for myself from the men's department.

Who do you think is the best film costume designer of the Golden Age?

I really don't have a favorite. Who is your favorite?

BK

Have you read/heard about/seen the book "A Thousand Cuts" (The Bizarre Underground World of Collectors & Dealers Who Sabed the Movies)? Mark Haggard is mentioned and I thought you might have been, but you were not. Interesting that one of the collectors was a substitute dancer on The Carol Burnett Show and mentions a dancer "Don". Interesting that they don't name him ss Don Crichton

It appears that DRs are losing weight right and left. George told us about his weight loss and now we have JRand and BK. Congrats to all of you and anyone I missed!

When I was in high school I designed and made apparel that I then sold in a little boutique on Ocean Front Walk in Venice, Ca. (Not far from BK's grandparents, though I didn't know that then.) I also helped with costumes at Bluth Brothers Theatre.

I took part in UCLA's fashion design program and was especially interested in fashion illustration. But the fashion design industry was dying--more layoffs each week. I supplemented my income during my early software days by doing custom clothes for a friend who was very, very difficult to fit.

This is sooooo cool.  Do you ever design and sew your own clothes?

Yes, in high school. Bruce will remember Ethelinn, also known as Lulu around Bluth Brothers. I made her a dress once, too. I found, though, that the things I like to design aren't the things I like to wear.

A few times in my life I have been very fashionable, but that was mostly because what was in fashion flattered me.  Moving around as we did I found sometimes what was fashionable in one location was not in another, especially for the children.  I always tried to make sure they fit in where we lived.  I know how it feels not to.  When I was in 7th grade a slam book was passed around and I was voted the worst dressed girl.  I agreed since I had to wore what my parent's insisted I wear, which was basically children's clothing.

While I can't always wear the styles I like, and that is becoming more difficult with my age related body changes, I still tend to prefer what others might call quirky/fun clothing.

Mark and I are in Overland, Kansas right now for the premiere of the brand new musical, "Have You Met Miss Jones?" It's a show written by Shirley Jone's son, Shaun Cassidy, and stars her other son, Patrick Cassidy and herself. It's surprisingly good. It has many songs from Shirley's musicals, but also several songs I'm sure no one in the audience has ever heard. For instance, it has songs from "Fade Out Fade In", "Wish You Were Here" and "Maggie Flynn". I know, Maggie who? The script is smart and at about 2 hours long, the show moves along at a nice pace. So, if anyone here lives within driving distance, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the photo and information.

But where are the sparkly boots?   ;)

Apparently about 100 minutes before I did my second jog last night at around ten after nine, there was a hit and run in Studio City - the victim was someone who worked regularly in LA theater and had in fact directed occasional dear reader Leslie's two kids - in fact, I saw one of those shows.  In the reports, they had the plate number so I'm at a loss as to why the culprit hasn't been picked up - if they have the proper license number they certainly know whose car it is and where that person lives.  The victim passed away this afternoon.  The shocker, for me, is that it happened just right near Moorpark and Laurel Canyon, which is right on my jogging route.  I jog from my house to Whitsett, up to Moorpark, east to Laurel Canyon and then beyond to Colfax.  At nine-twenty, not quite two hours later, there was not a trace of anything - you would never have known such a thing happened.  And several times this week I have jogged exactly at the time this happened and I'm here to tell you drivers are NUTS in this area with the texting and talking and paying no attention.

DR Jeanne, do not be alarmed!

Alas, I have found the missing pounds.  If only there were a convenient way to return them!

This is very sad.  If you jog at night, or dusk, do you wear reflectors?

DR JEANNE - I have always been partial to Travilla at Fox, Edith Head at Paramount, and Michael Woulfe at RKO.

Vera West at Universal did some nice work, but most of it was daytime contemporary stuff that didn't show her off.

I just thought about a series of books on fashion that I enjoyed immensely: Emily Cho's LOOKING TERRIFIC and LOOKING, WORKING, LIVING TERRIFIC... She showed styles for different personalities and also how to build a very comprehensive wardrobe with minimal pieces. Very well thought out, IMO. They're out of print, but I saw some copies on Amazon.

I'll look for their work. My cousin Marion was around in those days; I was born too late.
