I'm ready to go back to tonal right about now. I listened to the Antheil symphonies - not for me, but certainly worth listening to. Then I listened to another film composer's symphonies - two of them anyway - Benjamin Frankel - I like his film work but the two symphonies were just, for me, noise, modern, kind of serialism and it's just too atonal for me, although, that said, there are some atonal works I'm fond of. Now I'm listening to the second and third symphonies of yet another film composer, Ernst Toch. I like these slightly better than the others I've heard today, but still nothing I ever need to hear again. Interestingly, his third symphony won the Pulitzer Prize. I do like his orchestration very much.
