TOD:

I came to know Bruce Kimmel in several different ways and I don't know that I put them together until much later.

The first was likely on The Partridge Family and other shows.

Then there was a Mike Douglas episode on The First Nudie Musical.

I remember buying the album of Stages. So that was a third BK.

I didn't put them all together until after someone gave me a copy of A Broadway Christmas, which I have to admit was more important at the time because my friend Larry Moore did the orchestrations. And I had interviewed Liz Larsen.  But I played that album for an entire year and wanted to know more about everyone on there.

Actually, I worked on A Broadway Christmas, but that was Lanny Meyer's recording.  Because of the tight schedule he asked me to write three charts, and I wrote them in June 1994, in a Dayton Ohio hospital where my mother was dying.

Every morning, I would drive to the hospital, check in with my dad and brothers, visit a bit with my mother who didn't know who any of us were; she spent most of her time talking to dead relatives and complaining about being tethered. After seeing that all was status quo, I would go to the hospital cafeteria, commandeer a table, and spend the day writing.  I would take breaks and visit my mother's room, then head back to the cafeteria.  The next morning, on my way to hospital, I would Fed Ex to Manhattan the work I'd done the day before.  On the day we buried my mother, I began "Fireworks/Together" for Sally Mayes' Comden and Green album.

In spring 1980, the Thalia - a revival house I still miss after 30 years! - showed The First Nudie Musical.  I didn't know the film, but I was selling occasional copies of the recording at The Drama Book Shop. My composer friend Thom Heinrichs, who worked in the store's receiving dept., and I went to a showing around 6:30. The movie was part of a double feature, and I no longer remember the other film because we didn't stay to watch it.

Since the Thalia was only a block away from my old apartment on West 94th Street,  I got home around 8:30, laughed about the movie, and went back to the final 10:00 show.  The next day I raved about the film to everyone I encountered in the Book Shop.  A young actress named Lila told me she'd gone to college with Bruce Kimmel, and I said something like "I want to work with him."

Fouteen years later, I did.

I'd never heard the part about Lila before - that would be Lila Davis, who I really liked.

Elmore, it was your name on the album that initially made it, no matter how many songs you did.

Sounds sorta like a BK lyric.

I liked her, too. I always wondered what became of her.

I do not remember being credited on the recording, DR JohnG.  I certainly didn't expect it.  I was just helping Lanny out.

TOD:
I don't exactly remember how, but Mark found you online and made the connection between you and The Partridge Family. We saw you sing "Dance a Little Closer" at S.T.A.G.E. as Guy Haines, and had no idea who Guy Haines was or why he was completely covered up with balloons, but we loved the performance. Then, Mark started buying the Guy Haines CDs and the Benjamin Kritzer books and the rest is history. We first met you in the lobby of some show at intermission (neither of us can remember which one) and spoke to you about how much we loved the Guy Haines CDs and wished you'd record more of them. You said you might, but you never did. We're still waiting!  ::)

So, BK, were there no reviews for the Sterling's show?

I enjoyed reading about the show in the notes, and I loved the photos.  I can imagine the fun the audience had!

TOD:

I was looking at books on Amazon....and I saw the cover of BENJAMIN KRITZER.....it intrigued me, so I bought the book....

Then I realized I had some Bruce Kimmel produced CD's:  Not of This Earth, Cut in Boston, and a few others.....

Then former DR JMK began asking me trivia questions.  He said they were from this here site and that I should read and join in on the fun, which I did - it was the old board....probably sometime in the late 1990's.

Then I bought MORE BK PRODUCED cd's....and started watching for him on television...I also found THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL on VHS.  I had read about it in Danny Peary's book about Cult Films....this may have been BEFORE I joined the site...

Charlotte just called.  Her audition plans have fallen through because of a cold, so we're seeing the movie at 2:30. After yesterday, this can only be a better one.

I am pleased to announce that my book, MISS DINAH SHORE, is now available as an audio download through Amazon, audible.com  and, within a day or two via iTunes.  Pam Dougherty does a wonderful job narrating the biography.

TOD - I first saw the name Bruce Kimmel on a CD that DR Elmore sent to me, Liz Callaway's Anywhere I Wander, in the early '90s.
