And a late one it is.

Had to rise and shine at 5:30 in the a.m. to play in a high school concert.  Oy!

Got another one tomorrow, too.  Oy!

Enjoyed my quick skimming of the notes on Merrily.  Will get back to that later.

I must run a few quick errands now, then I can rest up a little before a concert tonight.

The reading of my new play went well. The feedback from the audience helped. I have trimmed a few lines of dialogue here and there and deleted several appearance of a running gag that overstayed its welcome. The running time was about 85 minutes so I gather with staging it might add another 10-15  minutes to it. With a set change between acts it should bring it to under two hours.

That's great, Michael!  Congrats!

I'm up, I'm up - already two calls this morning.  We've chosen the cover for Kay's CD - Doug did six choices - I liked two of them a whole bunch and Kay liked one of the two I liked a whole bunch and so that's done and we can announce this week.

Another problem with Merrily, the show itself, that I didn't mention but should have - the show's best song, Not a Day Goes By, is sung in act one by a character we've never seen before and who's been mentioned in passing about twice.  That's the structure not working, because at that point we know nothing about her and yet out she comes and delivers a really emotional song (that this actress chose or was directed to belt the entire time - a choice surely, but four minutes of anger at one level from a character we've never seen before, doesn't work, at least not for me it doesn't), a song she hasn't earned.  Later, there's a reprise of it when the characters are younger and we know her a bit better, but I'm not sure how you make that first version work better.

Beth is never really a fully realized character. Just the first wife type.

I remember Pauline Kael had a similarly apt comment about the movie Hair. This woman with an amazing voice shows up, tears through a devastating version of Easy to Be Hard -- and so what? Who is she? Why do I care?

Relief is the arrival of printer ink from Amazon.  My inertia is over.

Well, knock me over!  I opened a drawer of DVDs that I've opened many times during my search and there was long lost BBC War & Peace set!

It is!  I have work on some of the original Fred Waring band parts from the 1930 production of The New Yorkers and I have to print out new scores for the Guys & Dolls Piano-conductor score.
