There must be something in the air causing people's dream activity to pick up, because I, too, had a more "normal" set of dreams which included people and situations from my distant past as well as some intriguing stuff manufactured out of whole cloth.

It's a bit of a sad anniversary because on this day last year we were saying goodbye to one of the most beautiful, intelligent, and loving cats ever.  She had an impact on all of our lives.  I was playing an opening night Spelling Bee at the same venue I'll be playing La Cage aux Folles starting next week.

Speaking of which, first orchestra and tech rehearsal are Sunday, and I'm looking forward to that.

TOD:

A little of this, a little of that.  I think I'll have the chance to watch the Bells Are Ringing Blu-ray tonight.

THE YAKUZA is a good movie.

Mitchum at his action/hero best.

No idea what I will watch this weekend.  Probably some of the episodic TV shows (e.g. CRIMINAL MINDS, NCIS, etc.) that we have recorded.

An em-dash is the longest of the dashes between words and was so named because it take up the space of the fat letter "m". It is sometimes marked with two hyphens--when it's not available. There is also an en-dash (takes the space of a letter "n") and, of course, the hyphen.

There are varying rules as to when you use each.

I can't say I know the rules, but I use em-dashes all the time in everyday writing of notes and posting and whatnot.  They create an easy "break" in a sentence that (for me) adds clarity in a mishegas of commas, parentheses, and ellipses.

Did anybody watch the opening episode of DOUBT the other night?

I liked it, but I thought the background music was way overdone.  Indeed, it was so intrusive that, at moments,  we had trouble hearing the dialogue.

I'm wondering if they had em-dashes in Marcel Proust's day.

I guess I could pick up my next volume (famous last words) and find out.  Although, how would I know if they were put there by the translators in the course of reconstructing and clarifying those two-page long sentences?

Imagine the proofreading, if BK were to write in two-page-long sentences.

Well, if the Professional Weather Guessers are right this time, we're in for a whole 'nother week of uncommonly mild temperatures and, even more important, no unseemly precipitation.

This makes me smile.

Now that we're all an hour and a half older since my last post...

Where is everybody?

(Catchy phrase, that.  I heard it used once on The Twilight Zone.)

That was another flick that seemed to play in perpetuity on the CBS late movie. Loved it.

The book with more em-dashes than any other I remember is Zuleika Dobson.

It took a move and a new bed for me to stop expecting Bogie to snuggle under the covers with me.  It helped when Sherlock took his place but now I miss them both, the two snuggliest bedtime pets ever 😊

Zuleika Dobson, one of Ethan Mordden's favorite books.  I never got it.  There was a flop British musical in the late 1950s or early 1960s.

There are a handful of paragraphs in this book consisting of one sentence and I'm very proud of them.  I am the king of the em dashes - I began weaning myself off them two books ago and I always brag to Grant that the current book has many less of them - but then he points out that we still have over 100, perhaps more, so there you are.  I like them a lot.

I'm up - maybe six-and-a-half hours of sleep, but that's only because I was up so late proofing.  I shall be on my way to Grant's in about twenty minutes.
