Now playing: Rattle Conducts Britten. I don't know why I never go back to Britten - every piece I hear is brilliant, yet he's always off my radar. His piano and violin concertos are great, and his orchestral music is magnificent. Now I'll probably have to get the operas, especially The Turn of the Screw. I have more here, but I don't have the energy to go through the top of the closet again, and really I think the only thing I have there is The Prince of the Pagodas ballet. There's a nice set of Britten Conducts Britten - all the orchestral pieces, and then two box sets of his operas - I think those might be just the ticket.

When I was going to college in Bellingham, WA, a bunch of us in the music department got to go to the final dress rehearsal for Vancouver Opera's production of Britten's The Turn of the Screw. I had never heard of the opera or the story but I had heard of Benjamin Britten. It was (and still is) one of the most incredible theatical experiences I have ever experienced. It was absolutely riveting. It was a very sparse setting, but it worked so well.

And I'm back from seeing "Dunkirk" in IMAX. WOW! It was almost like watching a documentary. The visuals were abolutely stunning and so realistic. The dialogue was very spare and almost incidental. There really wasn't a story. It was just about this one incident during World War II...fictionalized, of course. But very well done.

Tonight, I'm finally able to usher again for Harlequin Productions' First Date. I saw it on their final preview/volunteer appreciation night and I thought that it was great then, so I imagine that it's even better now.

The TOD: If something can be easily gotten on the internet somewhere, I have no qualms about throwing it out. But if it can't be recreated on the net or elsewhere, i tend to have a hard time throwing papers and keepsakes like that away.

My favorite Britten operas are The Turn of the Screw and Albert Herring, but I think the only ones I find really difficult to like bcause of their astringency are the three Church parables - Curlew River, The Prodigal Son, and The Burning Fiery Furnace - and Death in Venice. I've tried, George, I have tried.

When we did Albert Herring at school, I played piano in the pit. I wish I had a recording of that. Not for me, for all the reasons; I really wonder what that whole thing sounded like, stage and pit alike.

I don't think I've even listened to my Britten recording of that piece since those years. That needs to be rectified.

Britten's version of The Beggar's Opera is still my favorite version of this difficult comedy. I was very proud of my 1979 production, assisted by our DR Ginny.
