I like good old American Mexican food.  I even like Taco Bell, and in Washington, Taco Time.

Ditto all around.  I don't know if I've ever had "authentic" Mexican food.  I had read (heard?) that most of the so-called "authentic" Mexican restaurants in America are really mostly Tex/Mex...that truly authentic Mexican food is very different than what we think it is.

Well, I need to be going.  I want to get to work a little early because I have to go downtown during my lunch break...and my tablet battery is dying, too.

Good night, Tom, and have a good day!

I planned to be in bed by 9:30 and out of bed by 5:30.  Around 11, I was quite sick - possibly a mild case of food poisoning? - so I reset the alarm for 6:30.  Well, at 5:30 I was wide awake, thinkiing about what I must accomplish today, and I am up and moving about.

I am waiting for a Fed Ex number from the Theater Institute in Troy.  As soon as that arrives I will head to Fed Ex and send off the drum part.  I have the two nymbers from last night to redo, so that's my first priority.

There was an article recently in a Texas publication online by a vegan who trashed Tex-Mex. Amazingly stupid article as she, if she's a vegan, can't eat anything Tex-Mex, except perhaps chips and salsa.

I don't go out of my way to criticize the vegan diet, except that too much of what you find in vegan restaurants is wheat based, not vegetable based.

My favorite Mexican food varies from day to day. Right now, I'd say it was the food I had at a restaurant in Matomoros, right across the border from Brownsville. It's not safe to cross the border any more so I doubt I'll ever get those grilled beef ribs or mushrooms sautéed with ancho chiles in white wine. Spectacular food. And for some reason, the corn tortillas and the margaritas are both better across the border.

I woke up at 3:27 am, answered nature's call, and couldn't get back to sleep.  This was definitely a case of too many things on my mind.  Finally drifted off sometime after 5:00, but the myriad little dreams were irritating as all hell.  Sometimes it just pays to get up.

This past weekend there was a free weekend of HBO through our cable provider, AT&T.

Unfortunately, we didn't know about it until Sunday.

 :(

We watched THE WIZARD OF LIES w/Robert DeNiro.  Excellent!

A documentary about Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher.  Also excellent and quite moving.

Then, 30 minutes into a movie, THE BIRTH OF A NATION, the damn thing cut off.

Bummer!

I love so many Mexican foods, it wouldn't be possible to list them -- all the standard "American" stuff, and then some.  And while I haven't experienced it in years, DR John G.'s observation about the corn tortillas and margaritas being better across the border just rings true.

I probably don't really know from Tex-Mex, as opposed to, say, Southern California style Mexican, but I had a few meals in the Dallas area that were wonderful.

Whenever I think about this, I miss my favorite Mexican jernts from back in the day in L.A.  The ones that immediately come to mind are El Carmen on West 3rd Street, Antonio's on Melrose, Oblatt's, Topper's in Santa Monica, the Red Onion chain (which I liked better than the other chains), and a few mom-and-pop hole-in-the-wall places that I probably never knew the names of but they were always wonderful and I wish I could better memorialize them.  And finally, the food trucks in and around Bell, Vernon, and City of Industry where I'd occasionally visit one of our plants, long before food trucks became a THING.  I hope they are still there for those workers in those parts of town.  The other places above are now but a memory, with - I think - the exception of Antonio's which seems to still be alive if I'm to believe what I read on the World Wide Web.

EDIT:  And the little food carts in Mexico!

I wonder where I can find a good arrangement of "Pick Yourself Up"?  Maybe it's on a CD somewhere.....  Then I can post a video on YouTube of myself singing and dancing to it.  So original!

Oh no!  It seems I don't have "Sondheim at the Movies"!  How is that possible?  I thought I caught up with that one just a couple of years ago...

Nope.  It's confirmed, I am The Man Without "Sondheim at the Movies".  And I could swear I've sat here and listened to it.  I even recognize the cover I see online.  Bizarre.  But this will be rectified.  I can do that.  Oh yes I can.

BK, if you have any to spare, I'd happily go that route before trekking into the wilds of Amazon.

I wish I'd been aware of this when I woke up at 3:27 am, but we've had the most wonderful solid rainfall this morning, which also broke the hot and humid temperatures.  I see there's more coming, too.  It's not like we needed the rain itself, but I'm not going anywhere today and the break in the weather and the running of the A/C is lovely.
