Watching an independent film from Kelly Reichardt called Certain Women that Criterion released earlier this year or late last year. Michelle Williams, Kristin Stewart, Laura Dern, James LeGros and Rene Auberjonois head a really good cast. There's a real discovery here, an actress named Sara Rodier, whose faces is constantly fascinating. The movie's based on several Maile Meloy short stories set in the Northwest that are engrossing and the pace isn't rushed. But it's also somewhat depressing, as the women's lives are hard.
When I was unemployed, I watched the same director's movie, Wendy and Lucy, which was about an unemployed woman who loses everything in her life, including her beloved dog. That one really traumatized me. This one isn't quite the same gut-punch.
