I just "fixed" something I've hated on my 4-year-old HP laptop (the windows one) from day one. It's generally a fine laptop, but it came with "Beats Audio" which is presumably for high quality listening -----    Well, wait a minute, I shouldn't claim to know WHAT it's for, because no matter what I did with it, it always sounded like total crap to me, whether listening on my desk monitors or on headphones.

What prompted this was, just today, a CD I was listening to seemed to exhibit lots of limiting, or compression, and I spent an hour of my life that I'll never get back, running around the house, checking this CD and a few others on a regular player, then back to the laptop to check them again there. I finally narrowed the problem down to just the laptop itself -- as opposed to either a crappily recorded CD, the audio interface, or the speakers or headphones. This "Beats Audio" software thing was doing it, and there was no setting to change that would give me what I wanted, which was a basically unadulterated level of sound at whatever volume setting I chose.

Cutting to the chase, I found other people complaining about the same type of thing, and followed instructions on deleting "Beats" entirely. Doing so forces Windows to install a generic sound driver...and Voila! The new driver does none of that crap. Do the CDs sound like they do when played on my Oppo Blu-ray player? No, of course not. But now I'm rid of so much bizarre filtering and such that I can hardly believe that such a significant improvement was to be had so easily.

Watching a motion picture on the computer - we're doing a soundtrack release that's wildly out of film order and it's never been very effective as a listening experience despite it being a wonderful score.  So, if the licensor will allow it, I'm going to reorder it in film order.

It was mostly in the 40's today.  63 tomorrow.  High fifties afterwards.

Not bad and no more school cancellations due to snow.

Later, or tomorrow, I'll listen to the same things via the MacBook to see what the difference(s) may be. Not that I expect any such awful behavior. But just for comparison's sake.

Tomorrow evening I'm subbing for the keyboard player in the band at a high school dress rehearsal for a musical about a boys' band.

The last time I played this show -- what was it, two years ago, I think? -- also for a high school, the production was just horrible. Not one kid understood either the show or his/her own character. So this will be most interesting.

Cast for the May Kritzerland is finally set - Karen Morrow is one guest - she's going to reminisce about Grass Harp since we just put that out.  And in the fun department, our other guest is Don Most (formerly Donny Most) from Happy Days - we've been trying to work this out for a while and May did the trick.

I love Karen Morrow.

Well, I finally get to leave work.  It's my niece's birthday and everyone is at my sister's house (and has been since 4:00!), but I've been in a meeting since 1:00 pm. :P But no more!

Be back later!

Happy birthday to George’s niece.

Scary Southwest Airlines flight today.  Tragic that one passenger died.

I’m flying Southwest next week.

"Beloved John G" sounds like it could work to tune of "Sloop John B" - of you fudge the scanning a bit

This is the worst trip I’ve ever been on.

I have not read Jo Nesbo's "Macbeth" yet.  I didn't realize it is part of the Hogarth Shakespeare project which gave 8 authors a chance to recreate one of the Bard’s classic plays. http://hogarthshakespeare.com/

There is one author, Gillian Flynn, still to publish a book.

My nephew Herman was featured soloist with an orchestra for the first time last night. He performed Mozart’s Third Concerto for Horn with the University of Kentucky Philharmonia. Name listed on the poster. My sister Annaliese says he was nervous but performed well.

Congratulations to your talented nephew!!!

Now I can't get The Manhattan Transfer "Twilight Zone" song out of my head.

(it has a favorite fake rhyme: Unpretentious / girl from Memphis )

And now my anal retentiveness must rear its ugly head:  the full song is called "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone."  First, they do a  variation on the Seasons 4 & 5 intro to The Twilight Zone:

Spoken:
With a key, you unlock a door to imagination
Beyond it is another dimension
A dimension of sight
A dimension of sound
A dimension of mind

You're moving through a land of both shadow and substance
Of things and ideas
Guiding you through this wondrous journey
Is the hypnotic sound of the twilight tone

And then the song proper is actually called "Twilight Tone":

When I hear this melody
This strange illusion takes over me
Through a tunnel of the mind
Perhaps a present or future time, oh oh

Out of nowhere comes this sound
This melody that keeps spinning 'round and 'round
Pyramidal locomotion
From a mystic unknown zone

Hearin' the twilight
Hearin' the twilight, twilight tone

Unpretentious girl from Memphis
Saw the future through her third eye
People came with skepticism
Picking, testing her precision, no, wo, oh, oh

Suddenly they heard this sound
This melody that keeps spinning 'round and 'round
A signpost up ahead is calling
Through the mystic unknown zone

Hearin' the twilight
(Twilight swept away, feelin' the rhythm)
Hearin' the twilight
(Twilight swept away, ba da, loo da, ba da loo da)
Hearin' the twilight, twilight tone

Hearin' the twilight
(Twilight swept away, feelin' the rhythm)
Hearin' the twilight
(Twilight swept away, ba da, loo da, ba da loo da)
Hearin' the twilight, twilight tone

Spoken:
Submitted for your approval
One Mr. Miller, who's about to take a trip
Into oddness and obsolescence
Through a zone whose boundaries are that of imagination
Accompanying him on this journey is the mesmerizing
Sound of the twilight tone

Sung:
On a cold and rainy night
One Mister Miller had a rare flight
Glen was up there boppin' a rhythm
Then the engine stopped to listen with him play that beat, oh, oh

Suddenly he heard this sound
This melody that keeps spinning 'round and 'round
Now, he resides and plays trombone
In the mystic unknown zone

Hearin' the twilight
(Hearin' the twilight)
Hearin' the twilight
(Hearin' the twilight)....

I've never seen this before!! Thank you!!

Now, if one has to get e-mails, this is the kind I like - from my friend Kay Cole, who just finished GEE.  I removed a spoiler - just a line but I know there may be one or two who haven't finished yet:

Oh My Goodness……..

This is by far the best book you have ever written.

I could not stop crying…LOVED IT ..LOVED IT.

Just amazing visually and viscerally..

Such heart ..  so poetic.

I am proud of you and for you..
Love you,
Kay

Very nice email!!!

But did she write a review?

Today I showed a friend how to get downtown from her house for jury duty. She lives so very far away and doesn't drive on freeways or downtown. I showed her how to get to a light rail station to take the train downtown. And then where to go.

Did you remind her to say " I'm sorry , can you speak up?  I couldn't hear you" every time she's asked a question?

Today was Dental Day again, and hopefully the last of the abscesses and root canals is behind me. This was my twelfth dental visit in the past six months. There's other dental work to be done--OF COURSE!--but, short of an emergency, I'm taking a break from it for a bit. My bank account needs to recover. As do I.
