Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke trippingly on the tongue, and now it is time for you to post until the trippy cows come home.

The cats let me sleep until 7:00!  They are fed, and I need coffee.

T.O.D.

Love HAMLET, particularly the Olivier version.

When I was a freshman in the Drama Department at the UW in Seattle, I played "Osric" in a one-hour TV production of the play.

Marian Hailey, who later did films (LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS, etc.) and Broadway (the HARVEY revival w/Jimmy Stewart and Helen Hayes), was "Ophelia," and the play was adapted/directed by Rod Whitiker, who later wrote THE EIGER SANCTION for Clint Eastwood.  "Claudius" was played by David Seidler, who won an Oscar a few years ago for writing THE KING'S SPEECH.

John Gilbert played "Hamlet".  He went on to become a member of the Seattle Rep.

Sadly, no tapes of that production of HAMLET still exist.

Also, during my Freshman year, I played "Grumio" in a stage production of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW.

We've got a couple of good days for doing things at home. Actual temperatures will be around 93 today and tomorrow, with the heat index well above that.

What I ran down to the city for on more or less the spur of the moment yesterday morning:

I decided to see '2001' in 70mm IMAX at the AMC Lincoln Square. I'd seen it many times over beginning with its first release on Cinerama screens, but I'd been away from it for many years. I'm not even sure I ever did more than watch a few scenes of it since the advent of DVDs, let alone Blu-ray. So, come what may, and I knew there would be both pros and cons, I wanted to take advantage of seeing it projected on what I believe is the largest screen in the country (80 feet high, 100 feet across).

Actually, I just remembered that the last time I went to it was in the 1980s during one of its many revivals at the Cinerama Dome. I totally missed going out to it during its year-2001 revival. It was fun reconnecting with it, and watching it with -- well, after 30 years, practically a different set of eyes.

I'd wanted to respond to yesterday's TOD about Porgy and Bess, so here it is:

Being taken to see the film in 1959 or 1960 is what blew me away and opened my ears (and eyes) to the world of Gershwin. A few years later I became enamored of the 3-LP "complete" (not) Lehman Engel recording on Columbia. I then branched out to the "original cast" one on Decca, and finally got the movie soundtrack. I liked different aspects of all of these, but it was in discovering the RCA recording with Price and Warfield that I became obsessed. Finally, here were some truly great voices with truly competent conducting -- not that Previn was any slouch on the film in that regard, but here was Skitch Henderson of all people knocking it out of the park. My obsession resulting from that eye-opening 1960s recording remains alive and well to this day.

That was it for quite a while. I still have my beautiful first issue of the Mel Torme version, but I never really connected with it (I always think I should give it a new chance). I enjoyed the Lena Horne and Belafonte recording. I love the Gershwin-played and conducted excerpts. In the 1970s the Cleveland Orchestra released the first truly complete recording. It was musically stiff and bland, but I couldn't get enough of hearing all of that heretofore missing music. Then along came the Houston Grand Opera version which I think is still really wonderful.

I was never on the right coast at the right time to see the Met's production. (I might still have my rough off-the-air recording from around 1984 when KFAC in L.A. was transmitting the Saturday broadcasts. Ironically, that highly anticipated one suffered long dropouts -- which I called the station about as they were happening, and they were as distressed as the listeners were. You could do that in those days, dial a station and have your call picked up by the person at the controls and get immediate information.)

I had no interest in the recent notorious re-conceived Broadway version.

Act One run thru went well.....we do it again to night.  The crew seems to have the idea of what they need to do so we shall see....

I have an appt. today with my oncologist to go over the results of my scan which seem to be okay if I am reading them right on line....but I ain't no doctor.

Only thing that seems amiss is a low white blood cell count....we shall see.

Tuesday morning greetings!  We are waiting for the washer repair person, who gave us a time window of 8am-5pm.  We're hoping he/she can figure out why water leaks all over the basement floor when the washer is running.

Our problem with overflowing turned out to be a blockage in the plumbing -- so it was a plumber who fixed the problem.

DR Ginny, London's Southwark Cathedral has immortalized its cathedral cat Doorkins Magnificat with a statue.

You might want to give Richard a copy of the book about Doorkins?
