Thoroughly enjoyed DIRTY DANCING last night. I had never seen it in a theater, just in its first home video releases on Beta or laserdisc.

I’ve always had a couple of very mild criticisms, but let’s not argue with success. It hits all the notes it ever intended to hit and is practically perfect in every way. What a crowd pleaser. Producer Mitchell Cannold and his wife (they met on the production) were in attendance, and an informative and enjoyable Q&A session followed the movie.

The playhouse threw a great opening night partay, and I can only imagine how splendid tonight’s gala will be. I’ll sort through the pictures I took and post a few later.

For a magnificently played and recorded symphonic soundtrack score that goes places, do not miss John Corigliano’s ALTERED STATES.

That just popped into my head. There’s a lot of “out there” and “far out” music of various types that I really enjoy.

Arthur Fiedler remains one of my favorite conductors ever and so much better than any "pod" conductors who followed him.  He had a sense of humor and a real knowledge of how to conduct a classical piece as well as a popular song.  Leroy Anderson owes much of his career to being one of Fiedler's favorite writers and arrangers.

I have this theory that it's because he was trained in the early 20th century conservatories where musicians had to "learn" music.  Today, a lot of lazy conductors learn a score by listening to another conductor's recording.

This and BK’s notes are very nice summations of the world of Mr. Fiedler.

Leroy Anderson, yes! In the classical arena, his Gaite Parisienne (both recordings, but especially the earlier one which was one of the first Living Stereos), his Nutcracker Ballet excerpts, and his New World Symphony are tops. There’s another Offenbach album, and I have a few more of the splendid “pop” RCAs I should dig out. And now I'm remembering that a year or so ago I picked up his Frank Loesser album, and have yet to listen to it.

I concur with the comments about Mr Arthur Fiedler....and Mr Leroy Anderson's LP of the songs from CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG is glorious.

One of my nit picky criticisms of DIRTY DANCING is that the father seems to be driving the Edsel to the resort with the gear shift in PARK.

I'd taken this Leroy Anderson parody off, as a friend of Howard Kissel said she thought he laughed but was confused how he became known for his hair (she said it's just his hair, not a style she thought he particularly chose as any statement), and I wrote to him, he said OK, but it stayed "unlisted" as I did hear that from his friend.  I had no idea we were so close to losing him when he wrote back.)

There's one of the people who appeals to Senator Jeff Flake yesterday (Friday) at the elevator whose cries really bring to mind Tuptim appealing to the King during the "Small House..." number, only of course Tuptim does not fully get her feelings out, and we go right back to the number. But yesterday, the voter did  get to say all she wanted (maybe) as CNN cameras were there, and whatever your politics, no denying she made change by daring to detain the elevator.

I won't link it, as my feeling was not about the politics, but both are easy to find on the net. The emotions feel almost identical.

I am home from a lovely brunch with Ella and her husband Tim.  When I stopped at Broadway Farms, I ran into Mark and his father.  I had not seen them in 13 years since I left Barnes & Noble.  Mark, who's now 38, is severely mentally and physically challenged, and a photo of us from B&N hangs on my refrigerator.  His father told me today that Mark stays during the week at a special home in northern Manhattan and comes home on weekends.  That kind man, besides being a mensch and a loving father, has the patience of Job.  It was really nice to see them.

"Hallelujah" sung by Steve and Eydie.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6l7gTe0bDDY

Legend has it their names for so avoided by DJs they released it as "Parker and Penny," but DJs who'd played it pulled back once words got out Parker and Penny were Steve and Eydie.

although this suggests it's just a legend, but it was just "contractual reasons," it's a thought as to why contractually.

I am about to have a major panic attack.  I do not know where Annabelle is.  I don't know if she sneaked while I was loaded down with trash going to the basement, or if she's found a new hiding place in this apartment.  I only know she's on none of her usual sleeping spots, and I've been through every floor and I cannot find her.  She's not coming when I call and my rattling her jar of treats has produced nothing. Thatch has eaten and he keeps trying to get out, which makes me think she did sneak out.

I'm hoping I will later look like a fool over this, but where the hell is she?

Can you put Thatch someplace safe and leave your door cracked open?  Then watch and see if see comes in or attempts to head out.

While while it began to drizzle and then turn into a light rain.  It was odd because I couldn't really feel it on portions of my alien arm.
