So we opened the revue last night, and it was one of those rare times when everything clicked right off the bat -- when there had been some risk that certain things just wouldn't. We had an all too short rehearsal period, some of which had been lost due to weather, and then people got sick, and one or two were learning the thing slower than we would have liked. With great effort it literally came together within the last three days. Our preview senior audience on Thursday was small and unresponsive even though they said afterwards that they loved it and they want us to come out for a command performance at their community center. But that evening was an effort, and it was excellent training for last night when we were rewarded with a very enthusiastic house. We're sold out tonight, and we thankfully have the next few days off (my first few days off in weeks), so I'm feeling pretty okay about it right now. It's been an uphill climb, but we have a show. Whew.

Kudos!

I cleaned the recyclable bag and it's drying.  I must go write for a bit.

Gambling can be fun, but I'm not much of a gambler. I'll happily play the lowball slots in any casino, and dabbling in most things at a casino are fun. But I have never come out a winner, and I, too, feel good just not coming out with less (or much less) than I went in with. I'm at least good at not gambling with money I can't afford to lose.

I used to love "neighborhood poker" and can enjoy a long evening of it. I used to go to a regular game down in the Village every couple of weeks, but I gave it up when everyone's interest turned to the "Hold 'em" type of game which I found totally annoying. I don't want to have to think and strategize to such an extent. I loved evenings of "dealer's choice" when you rotate through the most common varieties of poker at the nickel-dime-quarter level. I just don't know anyone around me right now who shares that preference.

I do love good well-written and directed gambling movies -- CINCINNATI KID and the like -- THE STING -- any movie about casinos, etc. I find that world endlessly fascinating. That said, I rarely take the trouble to visit any casino. I think it's been a decade since I've been to one of the Connecticut ones.

When it comes to lotto, I should actually play it more, and stick with one pattern of play. I think one needs to not analyze and agonize over that kind of thing. Just put down whatever little amount you're comfortable with losing every week, enjoy the little winnings that come your way from time to time, and be happy with at least being in the game when the big things happen.

TOD: I learned all I need to know about gambling in the fourth grade. Some friend of my parents had given me a handful of marbles. I had never had any before, and I liked them. One day, a girl in my class named Pamela wanted to play marbles. The next thing I knew, Pamela had all my marbles and I had no marbles. Lesson learned.

My first time in Las Vegas I put a quarter in a slot machine to amuse my daughter and a former Dear Reader. I got five quarters back. I called myself a winner and put the quarters in my pocket. I was disappointed, though. I thought there would be more. I mean, on tv the machines clang and clang and hundreds of quarters come falling out.

Last night I used DR Kerry's mixer. Today I will see a musical. Two good ways to remember my friend.

Nice.

Well, we're into our cue-to-cue, and it turns out that there are really only about 10 sound cues in the whole play!  There are actually more in the script, but the director isn't using all of them.

AND I found out just today that it was assumed that *I* was going to run the light board, as well! :o WHAT?

But thinking about it, and with only 10 sound cues, it's more than doable.  But, they're going to talk to a couple of younger people to see if someone wants to get the experience.

I won't mind not having to do that, but I told them that I would be willing to run both boards.  We'll see if they're able to get someone else to run the lights.

I reckon that Stella is down to two lives.  About an hour ago she went climbing and brought down - again! -the books on the bookcase behind my computer table.  One book - again! - fell into the space between the filing cabinets and dislodged the plug to the power cable for the printer, computer, telephone and modem.  I thought i would have a stroke.  I had to move furniture, crawl on the floor, and deal with it.  Everything is back in place, the printer was not broken, and all is well/

Annabelle has twice today climbed onto my worktable to play with me and sneezed snot all over everything.  I am very lucky I was never a parent.  I'm afraid I would have been an abusive one, just as my mother and her mother were.

I am about to close the computer, write four more bars of my orchestration, and settle in with the cats.  We need some chill time together, just relaxing and playing.  Annabelle and Stella were really irritating today, but I would die if I lost them.  I've been petting and hugging Thatch a lot because on Monday he will be quite angry with me over his trip to the vet.  It's his yearly exam and shots.

DR CHAS SMITH the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream indicates that you sometimes think your friend exaggerates his accomplishments which is unnecessary since he is very talented....

DR Laura's story reminded me of my brother's efforts to teach me not to gamble.  He would challenge me to bet when, being much older, he knew I was wrong.  Then make me pay up telling me he never wanted me to enjoy gambling.

Hmmm, I wonder why he was so concerned about me  ;D

I did enjoy going to the Jai alai games in Tijuana with my parents and betting on them.  I recall another fun day with my father, brother, and my aunt at the horse races.  I liked betting on a slot machine or two in Vegas or on roulette.  Never anything major, just little bets as a special activity.
