On August 21, Disney is releasing the new film, THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN, which is based on the book of the same name.  Both of these are based on Tacoma’s own Ivan the gorilla.

 These people first brought him from Africa to live in their home.  Obviously, he finally outgrew that idea.  So, he was moved to the B & I Circus Store in South Tacoma, where he lived for the next 27 years.

He lived in a very large glass-enclosed cage, but he also has this large private area in the back where he slept, and watched TV.

Ivan learned to draw and other things.  However, his favorite parlor ticket was to go out front and sit, and wait for a crowd of parents and their kids to gather to watch.  Then, while everyone was watching, he would masturbate!
