I was in a Barnes and Noble back in July to pick up a few things during their Criterion sale. The 1953 War of the Worlds had just been released, and every copy had been grabbed up before I got there on the second day of the sale. That happened nearly everywhere, and demand was such that it was backordered online as well, so I waited it out.

The other hot hot hot title then was the James Whale Show Boat which was #1 on my list. The store had only one copy which had apparently gotten abused at the packaging stage, and I declined to take that one. I'd had their laserdisc for years, anyway.

Finally, their flash sale happened this week, and I just got my shipment which included both of those. I'm a happy boy.

I just polished off the Sloppy Joes. My belly thanks me.

Forgot to add that I made an equal-sized batch using Manwich, because we all wanted to compare. In its favor, I've got to say that Manwich, in all its simplicity, gets the job done when you're starving and just don't want to go to any trouble.

But in comparison with this kind of homemade one? Feed it to the kids. Fill THEIR little tummies with that overly sweet gooey high-fructose-corn-syrup-filled goodness, and set the good stuff on the adults' table.

Did a bit of work on project one, then back to the mail place as a package that was late finally arrived and there was a nice green envelope from the Writer's Guild with a small residual for The Faculty. I can probably get five meals out of it

I'd been salivating over the big George Szell box - I had it in my shopping cart for ages at Amazon a year ago but never did it - at that point it was only about $170 for 106 discs. Alas, it's now in the stratosphere, price-wise, but I had something someone wanted and we bartered and now it is mine. Uploading the CDs now - will take quite a while, I should think. Listening to Dovrak's marvelous Slavonic Dances, disc one, in glorious mono.

Good Afternoon. We finished Confirming the Class of 2020 - 6 confirmation masses to make up for the 1 we used to have before we couldn't have crowds. I'm glad that's done.

So, before I head back to church for the Saturday evening Mass, I intend to start throwing this away and that away and put things in boxes. Tomorrow, I think I'll head to the storage unit and do the same.

Yesterday, I gave my notice - the same day I got the lease renewal for my current apartment. I even received a call from corporate headquarters asking if I had any questions about the lease, I told them I submitted my notice. They tried to talk me into staying by saying we could "negotiate" the amount - I told her I had already signed somewhere else. She asked why I was leaving - I told her a few issues. I didn't have time for the entire list!

The refrigerator is a new Crosley, whatever the hell that is, and I have finished stocking it and dealing with the debris and rubble in removing the old one. The office personnel may be rude bastards, but their two delivery men were very kind and helped me with things I cannot do in my current state, like unplug the microwave and get it off the top of the fridge and then put it back. I'm currently a mess, and should get a bath after the kitty cleanup.

Szell's recording of the Slavonic Dances is really wonderful.
