It was very memorable. I have told this story before. After the show I went around to the stage door. The show was at the St James, which has a nice big cattle area around the stage door, so there was quite a few people waiting. This guy came out and said that if we wanted to wait for Mr. Lane that was fine, but we needed to clear out the center area for the others to get out, so we needed to back up against the wall.
About twenty minutes later, the same man came out and announced that Nathan was too tired that evening, so he had already left by the other exit. He had filmed the David Letterman show before the performance, so he was exhausted. So we were all still standing around when Mark Linn-Baker came out the stage door. Poor guy has to come out and face a bunch of people who had just been told that “the star” had skipped out. But he was a real sweetheart. He and his wife went down the entire line of people and stopped and talked to every single person. I was near the end of the line, but he was still very gracious. He introduced me to his wife, he chatted about the show, asked about why I was in NYC, and when I mentioned it was my birthday, he wrote a very nice message on my program.
