Right. I get more of an impression of her from imitators than from her recordings. I don’t know if they were censored or she needed an audience, but they’re fairly innocuous.

Watched a fascinating PBS documentary on the TV series Soul! Couldn’t take my eyes from the screen. Dancers like Carmen de Lavallade (sp?), writers including James Baldwin, musical performers (Patti LaBelle, Al Green, Stevie Wonder), politicians, actors. The poet Nikki Giovanni was a big part of the show, and they interviewed her today. I remember interviewing her about 35 years ago, which would have been 10 years after the show. It was a phone interview. We talked for about an hour. But i got to meet her in person for a brief minute later.
