So, big news:
I told DR Elmore last week that this just might happen.
The Fantasticks is cancelled. At least for this season. We couldn't completely cast it with those who turned out to audition, and there were some unresolvable date conflicts among too many people.
We'd already moved our deadline a couple of times, and had to call time of death on this one. We should already have been in at least vocal rehearsals by now, and I am frankly relieved. We were teetering on the brink of disaster.
Everyone involved still wants to see this come about, maybe even next year. But the audition turnout in the region has been horrible for a few years now, and not just for musicals. The new prevailing attitude, from the theater board to the director and yrs truly, is rapidly becoming: F**k it -- from now on, we're pre-casting everything.
Darn. That's too bad. I love that show.
Unless you have a cast and a director who truly understand the material, the show can be a total disaster. When I played one of the
mothers fathers it was pretty bad. We had people leaving the theater saying, “Gee, I don’t see what is so great about that show.”
