My sister in law - whom I have written about before - is not doing well.

Her home nurse started her on a morphine drip today.  She can't take her pills because she can't swallow.  My brother called today to say that she could be gone in a few hours or days.

She is 58 years old.

Back from eggs benedict (really excellent), then a visit to CD Trader where I traded stuff - they didn't take some stuff, which was annoying, and the amount of cash wasn't really worth it to take as cash so I took credit, which was considerably more. I got a bunch of fun CDs, mostly operas and a couple of soundtracks - older scores but new masterings that I hadn't bothered getting.

Got the complete Mommie Dearest, which I could have sworn I had but when I looked for it a few months ago I couldn't find it anywhere. Since this came out nine years ago, I'm sure it's in a box somewhere - very annoying.

Also: Giordino's Andrea Chanier - know nothing about it. Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet. Strauss's Arabella, which I don't seem to have. And Nielsen's Saul and David. And I have a nice amount of credit left for my next visit.

I liked that Hamlet when the Met staged it.

Turns out I had a CD with Arabella on it - apparently I liked it but it's a live recording. This one is with Kiri Te Kanawa, Jeffrey Tate conducting. I know I don't have any of the others.

Also went to the mail place and got the car battery charger - boy is it HEAVY. But I had to also buy a charging AC cord - doesn't come with one and I'm out of extension plugs - so there's a cord made for just this type of machine and that will be here tomorrow. It's got plenty of juice left to charge, though. I also sent a really scathing note to AAA - they sent me a survey and I really let them have it but good.

I'd like to get one of those battery chargers. With three cars in the household, that can provide a lot of peace of mind, and save some money besides, should AAA ever get all pissy with us, too.  :)

Today would have been John McGlinn's 68th birthday. I owe the first part of my recording career to him and I learned much about musical theatre restoration and reconstruction from him. Working with him between 1984 and 1990 were some of the best working experiences I ever had, but as John's success rose, his personal demons - and there were too many, including superiority to cover his insecurity, vanity, and believing his own oress - did their best to kibosh him. There are days I want to dig him up to kick his ass and other days where I wish we were still friends and working on something.

So, I'm offering two of my favorite unreleased recordings from McGlinn's failed Packard Humanities Institute project. Yjr first is probably my favorite Victor Herbert number, ever, from Babes in Toyland, sung by Elizabeth Futral:

The second is from Jerome Kern's 1917 Princess Theatre show Oh, Lady! Lady!, sung by Rebecca Luker and George Dvorsky, in Frank Saddler's original 19-piece orchestration:

Those are great tracks, Larry!

I'm going to my first thing this evening, too:  The Doll's House: Part 2. I do not know the original Ibsen play, I'm sorry to say, but apparently you don't have to for this. We'll see.

It's not the same as the musical sequel, A Doll's Life.

That's exactly what I was thinking! ;D

Loving Andrea Chenier - it took a few minutes to get used to the slightly dull sound of the recording, but singers are great and so is the band and conductor. Really pretty music. So, now I'll have to get Fedora and see how that is.
