I'd love to see a REAL musical version of I REMEMBER MAMA with the Rodgers and Hammerstein of the late 1940s.

During the years I taught seventh grade, I always enjoyed teaching this book to my students. It's got lots of gentle humor, some light drama, and lots of wonderful life lessons to offer, and I think R&H in their prime could have done the book justice.

Rodgers was just too old and ill when he tried to tackle it late in his life, and casting a non-singer for Mama couldn't have been a worse decision. Irene Dunne, of course, who played Mama in the film version would have been an ideal Mama for the stage.

Here is your Page Two Horse Dance

Actually, DR vixmom, Nassau county bought a whole heap of these horses in white a year or two ago with the idea of painting them and selling them (!).  They gave this one to New College's art students to paint, but then they didn't like the anti-war sixties sentiments and refused to take it back.  So it was mounted outside the building.

The rest, I read, are lanquishing in some warehouse.  Not as good an investment as the disappearing rare coins in Ohio, I guess.

I have always thought that DAS BOOT would make a great musical.  Unfortunately, the big production numbers might be risky.  And, well, the love songs might be rough……

But seriously, I think that BAREFOOT IN THE PARK and RANDOM HARVEST both have possibilities as musicals.  BAREFOOT would most likely have a Jerry Herman score; while RANDOM HARVEST might be best with a Cole Porter score.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I would still like to see an adaptation of Jack Finney's story, "Marion's Wall".  It was made into the movie, "Maxie", which starred Glenn Close and Mandy Patinkin, but there were a bunch of things changed from the original story.

I'm pretty sure that there was a Maxie musical done in London a year or five ago but I don't recall if the source material was the story or the movie.

The French Woman was right about the voices wanting the child, but was wrong about which one.

IIRC (if I recall correctely, etc.), the French woman said she heard the voices say they were going to get the child, and then she added that she heard the voices say that some were going for the boy.

Yes, there was and it was horrifyingly bad!  My friend Martin Connor directed it, and I saw it.  I cannot recall the name of the show now, but Graham Bickley played the husband, and I remember telling Martin that the scene designer needed to change the date on the wall under the wallpaper from 23/06/25 (whatever it actually was) to 06/23/05 since the musical was set in San Francisco.  I have the program here somewhere.

That was really chilling what happend to Walt.  Totally unexpected and crazy.

Although I was less thrilled with the hatch plot.  What i saw at the end doesn't really tell me much.  And what was with all the promotion that we would see the "creature".  That was a creature???

It's amazing what one can accomplish when not sitting with one's laptop on one's lap and surfing the net.



I sorted through all my mail and bills.  Lots of stuff for the shredder.  However, tomorrow when I pick up my mail in Richmond from the past week and a half... Hmm... At least I'm caught up here.



*And I while opening, sorting and shredding, I was watching the "Ellen Degeneres Show".  Her first guest was a young man who had written and drawn a project for his Language Arts class entitled, "Ellen Island".  His teacher sent his essay and drawings in, and Ellen brought them on the show.  Boy, did that young man clean up - art supplies, a TiVo unit - with a lifetime subscription, and a trip to Hawaii!

Hmm...  I wonder what I could send into Ellen.... Hmmm...

In any case...

The young man's totally heartfelt "shock" and reaction to not only just being on the show as well as the "prizes" was refreshing to see.

Hey!  I just read on Playbill.com that TV Guide Channel to Present Pre Show Coverage of the Tony Awards!!  The article says:

For the first time in Tony Awards history, the TV Guide Channel will offer pre-show coverage of the annual awards.

From 7-8 PM ET on June 5, the cable channel will offer exclusive coverage of the Tony Awards red-carpet arrivals. The one-hour special is entitled "TV Guide LIVE at the Tony Awards."

I hope and pray that Joan Rivers WILL NOT be in attendance. Luckily, here in New York City, we have New York One, the all-news channel. They have a very good weekend Theatre show called On Stage and the correspondents from the show will be doing a pre-show. I will watch that, especially if the plastic surgery queen, Joan Rivers, does the play-by-play for TV Guide.
