Dinner at the Smokehouse was a welcome respite. Their anniversary, so everything on a spacial menu was $19.47, which is the year they opened and also the year of my birth.

Then I came home and watched a movie - I have the heat on now but it feels cold to me, so I'm gonna have Grant have someone come and check the pilot light.

I actually turned on the heater up here in my bedroom for the first time this season. It's getting a little toasty, but quite comfortable.

It's been a weird couple of days. Yesterday, I found out that my friend Rick died.

He and I met and became friends when we were in The Boy Friend together back in 1990. I also met and became friends with his partner, then eventual husband, Scott.

We all did a lot of theater together back in the day. Rick created and directed a local AIDS benefit revue called Babes With Big Hair...and boy, was the hair big! Rick was a hair stylist, so that's where that name came from.

They were done for 11 years (I was in 9 of them) and raised a lot of money for local AIDS organizations. Here's one of the only pictures that I have of the original cast from 1993. Rick is on the far left, Scott is third from the left, and I'm right in the middle:

The shows were just a big mishmash of music, nothing spoken, but Rick was really good at putting a good show together. I don't recall there being awkward song orders, or things like that.

There was, of course, a lot of emotion, happy and sad, and the big emotional ending song to send people back out into the world. For several years, we actually got some AIDS Quilts panels that were hung as backdrops.

For the first couple of years, we used "God Save the People" from Godspell as the ending number, but then I told them about "You Are the Light" from Metropolis and they loved that song, so we used that as our ending number for several years.

Anyway, Rick had full-blown AIDS and a few months ago had stopped taking his meds, and had finally decided to end his life with dignity. He lived a good long life. He told me back in 1990 during The Boy Friend that he had AIDS (I don't know how long he'd had it at that point) and with medications, he lasted more than 30 years.
