Went to see West Side Story tonight. I was the only person in the theater.

I found much of the movie very good. There were a few missteps, but most of those weren't horrible.

I loved the way they brought America to the streets, making it a parallel to the Jet song. And the ending with hundreds of extras lining the scene really let you see that the Puerto Ricans were definitely overcrowding the scene.

The dance at the gym was wasted. There was no focus of the shots on better dancers or enough of the choreography, but it didn't slow down an already-long movie.

I think the sound of Gee, Officer Krupke that was the most irritating. All of the dubbed voices sounded like they were coming into the picture from somewhere off camera. Well, dubbed but the voices didn't sound like they were coming out of the singers' mouths.

One reason why it works for today is that I felt the Jets were akin to Proud Boys, which skewed my sympathies this time through. Kushner tried to make it seem like it wasn't prejudice, that they were just wanting to hold on to their turf. But that didn't really work.

Oh, and the Sharks looked way too old, like men fighting boys. They looked like they belonged in a high school gym as much as Stockard Channing did in Grease.

But the singers were good, the two philharmonics used were wonderful and the music was mostly given a chance to breathe. I wonder if the soundtrack will come to be more loved than the movie itself, in the same way as Hello, Dolly! and Finian's Rainbow.

There were three musicals in the previews. One was Cyrano, which looked both bad and good (the acting looked good, the dancing looked like everything that destroyed musicals back in the 1960s). Another was for some Jennifer Lopez-Owen Wilson rom-com with music. The third was a Pixar movie about a girl who turns into a Red Panda.

Rita Moreno was wonderful, though in the role of tear-inducing Latina actresses in musicals from this year, Olga Merediz in In the Heights has the edge in my book.
