Have read a few "local" Facebook posts about our peach crops.  It appears they won't know the severity for a couple of weeks.  In other words, things may be a little better than they fear.

Today has been Access-a-Ride hell day.

The morning pickup was for 9:30, and because of traffic the driver arrived around 9:55, just before I was about to call and cancel my appointment. However, the driver was fantastic, very protective in getting me in and out of the vehicle and across the street. He was one of the best drivers I've had.

The return trip was hell, partly because of traffic. I wanted an 11:30 ride vyr AAR gave me 11:52. The car showed up around 12:10, and because of traffic, it took over 30 minutes to cross town, Then, he picked up a second p[assenger, a crabby old unsocial lady. It was past 1:00 when I got home.

That reminds me of the story about the Randy Vicar and the shower. He had hope in his soul...  or was it...   never mind.

DR elmore3003, glad you eventually got through all of that. Given some of your recent physical limitations, NYC can't be an easy place to get stuff done.

On the rare occasions I ate inside the school cafeteria, my favorite food to eat was my own packed lunch.  I can't recall ever liking the cafeteria food.

There was one item the school cafeteria made that I loved, the coffee cake.  I purchased it almost every day at the outside booths where snacks were sold.  Maybe lunches later on, but then I never purchased those.

The coffee cake was so popular that it is still talked about today.

I rarely liked the lunches I took to school because they were stale by the time lunch arrived. Mom’s homemade bread had turned to rock while meat or cheese had dried out. Olive spread was about the only thing that occasionally survived. Cafeteria food was largely unpalatable.

In elementary school, I was the "milk boy" - I sold the milk to my fellow students separately from the cafeteria line (why, I don't know). I remember my parents practicing with me to help me to learn to give the correct change. In any case, I was always last through the lunch line, so the kind ladies there always gave me a little extra. My favorite was the spaghetti.

I'm sure if I had the same thing today, I'd find it revolting.

Back from a fun meal with the brother. We ate for an hour, then drove around the old nabe for another hour.

I remember being in line in the cafeteria, and eating lunches, in my first elementary school (grades 1-3), but not any of the food I ate. I know we packed a lunch some days and bought the meal there other days, but I can only take an educated guess that my sack lunches consisted of a sandwich and probably bananas or apples or cookies.

The one solid memory from that school cafeteria is when we kids discovered those flavored straws that made the milk taste like chocolate or strawberry. Suddenly those were all the rage, and aside from whenever we'd drink chocolate milk at home, those were probably the times I most liked milk itself. Somehow or other, my sister and I both grew up not liking plain milk.

Fast forward to high school, the other really solid memory for lunches. They had a separate section of the cafeteria line, every day, for hamburgers and hot dogs, and I loved those hamburgers. They were simplicity itself -- all I remember is just the patty on a bun, and putting mustard or ketchup on them -- but to this day I can picture them and taste them. Later, in my senior year, the few kids who had cars would go up to a mom-and-pop place and bring back their hamburgers and fries, and those were really to die for. I'd give anything to have those back. Or to figure out how to recreate a simple thing like a patty on a bun. You can't, really. It's the blend of beef, the way they were cooked, etc.

TOD:

I liked the sloppy joe sandwiches on a hamburger bun....and the french fries.

The chicken and noodles were also pretty good.

I think my favorite was the Manhattan!

One of my favorite drinks for when I am the designated driver is tonic water with bitters.

LOL, I found it revolting back then, but then my mother's spaghetti sauce was incredible.

Bruce, Jeanne, how would you describe the outdoor huts we had for purchasing snacks?  I attempted to find a photo and failed.  Since I had them at my junior high as well as in high school I am guessing Jeanne also had them.
