THE BEAT GOES ON
« on: June 12, 2005, 11:59:13 PM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes went on, like the beat, and now it is time for you to post until the beat cows come home, daddy-o.  They're like, on the road, man, those beat cows.  They're reading Ferlinghetti and Kerouac, man.

Interesting about the score to Target.  As I said, it's by Michael Small, who is one of my favorite 70s film composers.  And there are three cues in Target that are great, just like his old stuff.  The rest of the score is awful - synthesizers and bad music, and I just thought, the guy has really lost it.  But it didn't make sense - how could he write those three great cues, and then a lot of substandard Vangelis crap?  Well, I finally watched the end credits - the last scene of the film and the end credits features the worst of the music, and there it was - a credit that read: Additional music by Intersound, Inc.  In other words, some creepy synthesizer scoring company replaced most of Mr. Small's contributions.  Someone should have yelled bloody murder rather than allowing Zanuck/Brown to try to be "hip" and "with it".

My problem with 80's films (and every decade after), I have to be reminded of the films before I can remember them.  They are not ingrained in my psyche like the films of the 30's, 40's, and even the fifties.  I know there are good ones, but I have no reference texts for these films...so they don't stick in my mind.

RAN is a good one.  I guess my THE FLY.   I love a little movie called THOSE LIPS, THOSE EYES...with BK's old pal Tom Hulce and Frank Langella about summer stock. BODY HEAT. The ever-weird Ken Russell's CRIMES OF PASSION.

I think the reason wonderful quirky directors like Penn didn't flourish in the eighties was because after the Raiders/Star Wars phenomenon,  everything became about the 20 million dollar opening weekend, only hitting home runs, and the Studio executive as Auteur...a concept I think started at Disney with Eisner and Katzenberg.

The individuality of interesting film-makers was suddenly straight-jacketed and all their interesting edges were knocked off in an effort to make movies for the lowest and largest common denominator.  In a way, Spielberg and Lucas, by having mega-hits, ruined the film business by setting up an expectation of financial success that became the goal.  While I think Raiders and Star Wars are perfectly enjoyable, well-made films...neither would make my top one hundred or probably my top two hundred list.

Found a list of best film nominees from the decade:  AMADEUS, THE DRESSER, ATLANTIC CITY, BRAODCAST NEWS stand out in my memory.  Others THE STUNTMAN, MY FAVORITE YEAR, HENRY V.

Morning folks!

I trust everyone had a good nights sleep!  Not much to say this morning except it’s Monday.  Ugh.  This is my “late” week, meaning I have to stay until five instead of four thirty.  Ugh.

And I just have to say that I should have kept my mouth shut about the ads—They’re back!  That’s all I’m going to say.

Gotta run for the bus! Have GREAT day all!   :)

As CP said earlier, I have trouble remembering 80s movies. I think that's when I stopped going to movies regularly because there was not much to appeal to me. I think movies I liked which I remember are small indie movies like Parting Glances. I liked Arthur. I liked 9-5. I liked Airplane. I liked ET, it didn't change my life. I liked the first Back to the Future. The second was middling, IMHO, the third Back to the Future was dead on arrival. I thought it was awful. I liked Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

That's it for now.

Oh, yes, before I forget. For the New Yorkers here, Footlight is having a sale on records only before they move to Internet only sales. They have large bins of $2 records and all other records not marked as $2 records are 75% off. I'll have to look through the bins of cast albums. I may finally be able to afford some of those rarities that I wanted. I don't know if they will still be selling used CDs on-line and they haven't decided yet if the used CDs in the store will be on sale.

Good morning, all!  I slept terribly on Saturday night, but I slept quite well last night, even longer than usual.  So now I'm up and moving and ready for a GOLDEN APPLE day with violas and celli.

ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING is the only 1980s movie I can think of at the moment that I liked...the 80s was not my favorite decade for film making.

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers. I slept in until 6 a.m. Today I will take a day off and catch up around home.\

TOD: I had young children in the 80s, so I pretty much missed all the movies then. I caught up on some of them when VCRs became available, and I was quite disappointed.

I think there are plenty of good movies made in the 1980s from serious, stately fare like A ROOM WITH A VIEW to pure entertainments like RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT.

Some other favorites: DRIVING MISS DAISY, FIELD OF DREAMS, CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, A FISH CALLED WANDA, DIE HARD, RADIO DAYS, MAURICE, ALIENS, VICTOR/VICTORIA, THE COLOR PURPLE, THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, OUT OF AFRICA, PLACES IN THE HEART, THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK, A PASSAGE TO INDIA.

Well, the show (LA CAGE) has been put to bed and I am once again free to pursue other interests that don't have me tied to a script and a score for many hours per day. Oh joy! Oh rapture!

And I had the most BLISSFUL night of sleep ot waking up once to run lines in my head before dropping back off to sleep. I'm one of those actors who can't leave the show at the theater. When I'm doing a show, it's with me constantly, and so it's a great relief when it's over to leave it behind.

Of course, auditions for OLIVER! are looming in a month and a half, so there will be some preparation for that, of course.

Hello, I have not caught up.  We spent Friday evening watching some awful cartoon marathon of Failry Odd Parents, because the Vixter said that every Friday evening we spend watching Daddy's Britcoms and why can't we have a family TV night watching something SHE chose instead, so we stupidly agreed before finding out waht she wanted to watch......

Saturday day was her dance recital, so hthe entire morningwas cosumed with bathing, hair washing, hair drying, hair styling, makeup and costuming

From 12 -4  we were att he recital and ten we had to drive 20 miles further east to Holbrook (DR Ben will know where that is!)  to my brother's home to celberate my neices 7th birthday... the barbeque, swimming and present opening extravaganza lasted until 10:00 PM, thena drive home and happily  all to sleep.

Sunday was church and the last day of Sunday  school,  followed by grocery shopping, laundry  and grilled cheeseburgers and corn on the cob

By then the temperture wa well into the 90's so we all floated around in the pool until 6 pm, and then the Vixter got ready for her church youth group end of the year barbeque and  after she was dropped off, Mr. Vixmom & I ate grilled Nathans' hotdogs and beans, had our Mario Italina ices and watched  "Sideways".

The the Vixter had to be picke up by 9:00 we all took our showers and off to bed by 10 PM

And that is my  E & T excuse for the weekend.

I will now attempt to catch up while thinking of movies of the 80's....

White Nights immediately comes to mind
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Back to The Future
Henry V

Was Jaws in the 80's or the late 70's? I cannot remember....

Well yesterday it rained.  It rained 3" of water here.  Everything was flooded.  My computer LAN connection was disrupted for HOURS AND HOURS.  It is now working, sort of.

Wet. Wet Wet.

DRs LAURA & SANDRA - the OLIVER! program and souvenir book that you sent me was the HIGHLIGHT of the display case.  Everyone loved it.  Even though there is a Don't Touch sign on the case, every time I came in, it was turned to a different page.

DR GINNY as Monica Breedlove....oh my!

80's films....hmmm... MAURICE and ORDINARY PEOPLE are favorites.  I will have to do some thinking on that.

TOD:  I love 80's movies, probably because I went to the movies more often back then.  Here is my short list of favorites:

Reds
All of Woody Allen's 80's oeuvre
Field of Dreams
Moonstruck
Witness
Poltergeist
The Dresser
Prizzi's Honor
The first and third Indiana Jones
Back to the Future
Brazil

More to come...

The more I read people's lists, the more I realize that there were some good movies back then (oh, the difference 20 years will make). Prizzi's Honor, Moonstruck (written by Tony award winner Patrick Shanley) and My Beautiful Laundrette are all favorites.

DR Vixmom, I guess Vixter and I have something in common, I love Fairly Odd Parent. If an episode is playing while I flip through or I'm on the bike I can always watch it and laugh. I also really like The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius. Maybe I have an affection for Nickelodeon since I worked for them in the mid-80s.

I'm so glad about the Oliver stuff. That makes my day!

I can take Fairly Odd Parents in small doses, but this was from 7 PM  until 9 PM and that is just too much Fairly Odd Parents for me!!

I do enjoy Jimmy Neutron and don' mind watching that with her, in fact all three ofus went to the Jimmy Neutron Movie last years and we all enjoyed it.
