I watched a high definition broadcast of THE KING AND I earlier this evening. For the first time EVER on home video, Anna's striped dress in the "Getting to Know You" number didn't alias all over the place. The stripes were rock solid and didn't "move" at all, either in close up or medium/long shot. I watched the entire film like I had never seen it before. The colors had taken on a richness and depth I had never seen before, and it did indeed look like you were watching real life through a pane of glass. It was really breath-taking!

When high definition DVDs are finally introduced and become affordable, we're going to be watching familiar films with a totally different look to them.

Well...

I ended up paying a sort of surprise visit to my friend, Rachel, this evening. We've been playing phone tag for months, and we haven't seen each other in about two years. And, of course, she only lives about 20 minutes from my parents' house... So... I was driving around, and just decided to head over to her house to see if she was home....

It was great seeing her again, as well as her husband, Robert. I've actually seen Robert a few times in the interim since he used to sing with the Washington Opera Chorus - he's a baritone - and we'd run into other in the canteen at the Kennedy Center. However, the great pleasure of the evening was re-meeting her three-year old daughter, Madeleine Rose - the last time I "met" her, she was nine months old - and also her newest arrival, Olivia - she's six months old. Great kids.

Madeleine ended up putting on an impromtu dance show for me. She went over to her father's computer, brought up iTunes, and selected "Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance)". Then she proceeded to bop away for a couple of minutes. And sing along during the big "ahhh... Aaahhh... AAAAHH..." section. -I think her and my nephew, John Michael, would get along very well.

Olivia was a little cranky, but since I had sort of interrupted her feeding time, it was understandable. But she's a "mellow" child, and she has a big sister who likes to take care of her.

I ended up hanging out there for about an hour or so. Lots of catching up, and even some dish.

It was great seeing her again, and it turned out my timing was very good. Tonight was one of the few nights they had just planned to stay at home and relax. And since I had arrived just after they had finished dinner, they were in clean up mode, and get the kids ready for sleep mode, and I was not that much of a distraction.

I was also finally able to drop off the present I had bought for her girls a few weeks ago. It's this big over-stuffed bunny, that is basically a seat/seat cushion. "My First Sofa" is embroidered on it. Very cute. And Madeleine Rose decided right away that would be her new reading chair.

OH! And I had also found the perfect Father's Day card for Robert a few weeks ago. The pic on the front is a father sitting in a bathtub, and all around him are babies toys, baby clothes, stockings hanging from the shower curtain rod... "To The King of the Castle".

Tomorrow I'm having lunch with my dear friend John who leaves on Tuesday for London for 10 days. He has tickets for MARY POPPINS, and I can't wait to hear about it from him. He and I have done quite a few shows together.

If I'm remembering correctly... A big part of the L!V!C! flap also centered around the fact that the director had viewed the archive tape of the Broadway production at the Lincoln Center Library. Yes, the whole stage directions issue was also part of the mess, but it was the viewing of the video that sort of broke the case. I believe Mr. Mantello won.

Yes, Matt, we had a wonderful matinee today. The audience seemed to love the show, even if they appeared to be a little too elderly to give us a standing ovation.

Next week we have Wednesday thru Sunday performances to complete the run; which is good, since I open in 42ND STREET on July 8

I've never been in your part of the country, but our Sunday matinees always play to the "anciently elderly" (as a friend calls them), and it's hard to even get a peep out of them.

When I did INTO THE WOODS, the show was recorded on a Sunday matinee, and it got almost no laughs or applause. I think the audience was lost almost from the first words I spoke. That's a show tape that's painful to watch because everyone is working so hard and doing so well and receiving NOTHING in the form of feedback from the audience.

Thanks, Matt, that is very kind of you.

I know what you mean about painful videos. When I played the Stage Manager in OUR TOWN, they brought in a professional film crew to shoot the video. Unfortunately, they were only able to come to our dress rehearsal. So, I have this beautiful video with almost no laughter and no applause, except that which we got from the director and the tech crew. Very, very painful to watch.

P.S. You should really visit this part of the country someday.

I did drive back home tonight TCB...but it is only an hour drive....however it was a strange drive through quite a beautiful, but a bit scary, lightning storm.

Finally connected to the Internet. I was having withdrawal. However, I am not connected in my room - hopefully, someone can help me do that tomorrow. But, they have a nice business center here, with high speed Internet, so that's where I am now. Therefore, I'm going to write the notes now, post them, and then hie myself back to the room. ..and I must say we had a lot of fun at the HHW gathering tonight in Portland Oregon!

It was a small group consisting of the guest of honor BK (who DR George and I both were quite thrilled to finally meet), JMK and his lovely, and very sweet wife Betsy, local Portland actress and television personality Adair Chappell and her very, very, very (that is 3 verys) handsome boyfriend Dan, Adair's darling mother Isabelle (who used to be a performer in New York back in the 1940s), singer Bruce Blanchard who, it turns out, has sung on a couple of BK's CDs (and who is also a hottie!), Bruce B's lovely wife (darn it) and cute as a button 2 1/2 year old son, DR George and myself. JMKs kids popped in and out, now and then, as did DD (dear dog) BeeGee who I just want to take home with me, he is such a beautiful dog.

We ate some very tasty, and heart healthy, Boca burgers and garden burgers for our meal topped of with Betsy's most delicious chocolate cake (and I do mean most delicious!) and George's very fine home-made fudge, which I can honestly say is probably the best fudge I have ever tasted in my life!

Between George's fudge and Betsy's cake my blood suger is likely way up...I am not even going to check! LOL! But I just couldn't help myself! LOL!

As I said, it was a bit overwhelming to see BK in real life..just knowing him from his film roles and from this here sight...and I have to say he is one of the funniest people I have ever met!

When he was talking about a fairly well known actor who is gay and who lives in close vicinity to BK's own home, and how said actor flirted with BK...well, I about busted a gut! Even on my drive home, as I would think of BK's expressions and gestures during this story, I was laughing out loud!

For the first half of the evening I was pretty much a wall flower...in a room full of show business type folks it is a little hard to divert any attention away from them! LOL! But the conversations were quite fascinating and I am really hoping that I will be able to attend this SOMETHING BIG, SOMETHING BACHARACH show next weekend that Bruce Blanchard (sigh!) and Adair Chappell are going to star in...they sang two songs from the show, accompanied on the piano by JMK, and gosh what great voices they both have! And since BK will be giving his input to the show in the next couple of days, it should be a swell affair!
