93 degrees here today. I went to Trader Joe's, then the salad bar, to stock up because the next several days are forecast at 98-99. I don't do well in the heat -- can't eat much and have all the energy of a wet rag. I will stay in as much as possible.

Is this heat a result of a Santa Ana, or something else?

I always remember the Santa Anas around this time of year, and the over-100 degree days they can produce. But (and I know it's always a joke, but I do mean it) at least it was a DRY heat.

We had a heat wave in one of my first summers in Danbury. It reached 105 or so, something this area rarely sees. What was weird about that one is that I recognized the feel of it -- there was very low humidity, for whatever reason, and it felt exactly like one of those days in L.A. Exactly. And I don't think there's been one like it here since.

I do remember when I was living at the beach, in Redondo, and the apartments had no a/c -- you'd get one week sometime in August that would make you wish you had the a/c, and I believe that was from Pacific Ocean weather, not Santa Anas, because there was actually some humidity.

The Santa Anas themselves were actually rather delightful if you lived near the beach.

Ah, I do miss it.

I don't know how I forgot DARLING in my Dirk Bogarde list yesterday.

And I also didn't comment on the movie that MR BK mentioned in the notes....CAST A DARK SHADOW.....what potboiler! Based on a play that must have been something onstage....and the comeuppance is most spectacular.

Bogarde seems to be channeling his inner twink in dealing with the older ladies, reading muscle man magazines while waiting for his next victim.....can murder be far behind? Is there a character pretending to be someone else behind the mask? Is there ANY behind in this movie? Well....not really - but it is fun in a bargain basement way.....and Mr Bogarde appears courtesy of The Rank Organisation - I think.

Listening to Serena Williams' match at the U.S. Open....it is on across the hall.....it is a bit much...but she seems pretty level headed for a someone who has been a champion for a long time - and certainly must be surround by folks on the payroll who remind her of her greatness several times a day.
