Listened to John Irving read his short story, The Pension Griilparzer, which was part of The World According to Garp. Some writers are not the best interpreters of their own work.

It was nice of you to bake a pie for DR Ron Pulliam's birthday, DR John G., but will it still get to him in time - on the day?

I like to sit on my porch in my rocking chair between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Most days this week a man has been driving his PT CRUISER in front of my house three or four times during that hour.  He has a big sign on the back of his car that reads:  DUMBASS FESTIVAL  FOUR BIG DAYS!!!

I was thinking about going.  I saw September - but I couldn't read the dates....

Today on his third pass by I looked and the sign read:

BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL
FOUR BIG DAYS
SEPTEMBER 3-6.

I lost interest in the event.

Oh, my.

No.

MORE FOR ME.

Truthfully, I’d be just as happy with a plain old frosted mug of delicious root beer. Or, yes, a root beer float with good vanilla ice cream.

But if this were set in front of me, would I be rude?  Never!

Hang onto your arses, for I am here tonight to tell you, ladies and germs, that PERSON NUMBER ONE on my America’s Most Long Awaited Response list has just responded to my missive.

The missive from July 11th, that is. Which would be the first of my three unanswered questions (in the spirit of Mr. Charles Ives of Danbury). But that hardly matters, since the question was basically the same in all three missives, just tactfully reworded in each.

Praise the Lord and pass the smelling salts. I am SO glad I posted that this morning.

I thank all of you who wished me Happy Birthday!!!

It has been a "day", not all of it a joy as I pondered the realities of being 74.

I decided to treat myself to some entertainment this evening, and I turned to YouTube.com and watched favorite scenes from movies as well as performances by John Wilson and his orchestra at various BBC Proms from years past.

Among the scenes I revelled in were the "They Can't Take That Away From Me" number that Fred and Ginger recreated for "The Barkleys  of Broadway".  Another is "Le Jazz Hot" from "Victor, Victoria".

All in all, an entertaining evening.

Thanks again to all who proferred birthday greetings and wishes.

Last night I received a message on Facebook from the director of The Miracle Worker.

It was sent at 6:19 p.m. and let me know that the newspaper photographer had not shown up yet and that some cast members very very upset.

I pondered a response to this strange missive that I read a few minutes after it was sent.  Before I finished typing, I received a message timed at 6:29 p.m. that read:  "He made it!"

Later in the evening I forwarded a copy of my original email from Monday that clearly said that the photographer would be arriving at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening.  I noted that perhaps some of "the cast" were upset prematurely.

I have received NO RESPONSE.

A clear case of premature expostulation on someone's part!

I looked all over for my round cake pans. I can't find them. I don't recall decluttering them.

Now what am I going to do with that cake decorating turntable I just bought?

Pizza?

We had a major rainfall this morning...a true gullywasher.  Of course, it rained all through morning and early afternoon...all because my grass was cut two days ago. It now looks as though it hadn't been mowed in a week or so.

Still, kept temps low.
