Well, if you went through life as "Baby June" you'd be stern too!  ;)

Well, I sure agree about Ian McKellan being robbed for GODS AND MONSTERS. I was actually shocked when he lost, and the Oscars don't shock me very often.

Speaking of getting kicked in the head by a Shetland pony, I could give one to myself for forgetting that TCM ran the movie version of Light In The Piazza last Friday.  Anyone catch it?

I wrote myself a note to watch it, DR D(tM), and when we had a horrific storm come through here about 10 minutes before the movie started and I turned everything off. I didn't even set the DVR to record it because I was so sure I'd be seeing it "live." I'll catch it the next go-round.

Great numbers in mediocre musicals. Some of my favorites have been named already - the Champions' "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" from LOVE TO LOOK AT, Marge CHampion's "Derry Down Dilly" from EVERYTHING I HAVE IS YOURS, that Rall-Fosse challenge dance from MY SISTER EILEEN. I like another "Fun House" number, the one in HIT THE DECK with Debbie Reynolds and Russ Tamblyn.

DR Matt, I just checked--the next showing on TCM is 09/01/2005 12:30 PM.  Mark your calendar!

The trash can lid dance is with Dan Dailey and Michael Kidd along with Gene Lantern Jaw Kelly in IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER.

Speaking of that great movie, IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER has fabulous numbers in it throughout: Grey's "Thanks A Lot But No Thanks," Dailey's "Situation-Wise," Charisse's "Baby, You Knock Me Out," Kelly's "I Like Myself."

It's one of the greats, and I was SO pleased to read it's being readied for DVD release (but probably not until 2006). I wish THE PIRATE was being readied, but I've read nothing about it unless Warners is doing another Garland box.

June Haver was just fine, but I think she missed having "star quality." Fox groomed her to take Betty Grable's place as their leading blonde musical star, but she just didn't quite click despite having talent. Sometimes, especially in the movies, that's not enough. To see Marilyn Monroe and June Haver in the same scene in the same film (LOVE NEST), you can see why one clicked with the public and the other didn't. Marilyn, apart from the glorious look, just sparkled though I suspect she was less talented than June Haver.

Thank you for checking, DR Dan. I have been meaning to do that with PIAZZA and a couple of other films (MIDNIGHT LACE comes immediately to mind).

A great musical number for the camera: "This Heart of Mine" in ZIEGFELD FOLLIES.

Finally, the 16 tons (a Forever Plaid reference) of landscape boulders scheduled to be delivered last Friday arrived today. Now we just have to move them.

That LARA CROFT movie is endless, but what should I expect from a film based on a video game? The fights are SO tedious, and there's never any suspense about who's going to win the battles.

After about 20 minutes, I stopped it again to mark my place and will pick it up again later.

Then, I put on X-MEN 2 (actually, it's called X2, isn't it)? This movie with its DTS soundtrack is as close to reference quality sound and picture as DVDs are likely to get until the advent of high definition DVDs.

Warners executives were expressing at their last chat how expensive Ultra-Resolution is to remaster 3-strip Technicolor films with, and that after OZ, there aren't a lot to choose from.

Amazing that they'd say that with such lush 3-strip Technicolor films like THE PIRATE, ZIEGFELD FOLLIES, SWEETHEARTS, BITTER SWEET, THE YEARLING, BLOSSOMS IN THE DUST, DIVE BOMBER, KISMET (Ronald Coleman version), LIFE WITH FATHER (instead of those blurry public domain versions), and THE THREE MUSKETEERS (Gene Kelly version).

Maybe some of these aren't "classic" enough to warrant the expense, but I'd sure love to see them in pristine condition.

In that lovely film, I'm partial to Kelly's rollerskating number, "I Like Myself," and Charisse's boxing gym number, "Baby, You Knock Me Out."

A great musical number for the camera: "This Heart of Mine" in ZIEGFELD FOLLIES.

F-a-b-u-l-o-u-s number.  My absolute favorite from that film, with "Limehouse Blues" a not-too-close second favorite.

And in "Good News" both "Pass That Peace Pipe" and "Varsity Drag" are simply SWELL (although the film is not mediocre)!

:D

Some would consider BLONDIE GOES LATIN to be a mediocre musical (however, not I as it is one of my all time favorites), but the final dance number with Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake  mamboing it up while Tito Guizar sings is quite good...I think!

And then the dance number to THE ZOMBIE STOMP in HORROR OF PARTY BEACH....I always liked it.

And while "The Broadway Melody of 1940" isn't anywhere near mediocre, the Astaire-Powell "Begin the Beguine" number lifts it into near-classic status.

That number is my selection for absolute best tap number EVER put on film.

Hi folks! After several close calls, I have finally escaped the dreadful dungeon of my employment. I don't want to give it away just yet, but I'll give you a hint: The  new gig is for a company that publishes playbills. I'll be in their classic arts division which handles said playbills for the events at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, etc.

The relief of leaving a place which I had had many great times, but seen so many friends treated rudely and/or fired in just the past couple months is hard to convey. The people at the new place seem very cool, relaxed and turmoil-free.

I had been in a state of paralysis for a few days while I waited to hear back. Especially today, after I met with the publisher. Finally, the call came, the news was good, and a load is lifted off my shoulders.

Hoo + Ray!!

This comes as no surprise to me, as I believe you were eminently hire-able!

And somehow, the type of publishing seems "just right."
