Three weeks ago the heater here in the apartment made a loud noise one evening, then there was no heat. The next day one of my neighbors came over and relit the pilot, so at least I had heat, but I didn't trust it and kept the appointment I'd made with the gas company. The technician came out on Thursday and declared it unsafe. Apparently, they don't do repairs anymore, so a private HVAC contractor was called. He came out this morning, adjusted it, and claims it's now safe to use. The building owner has agreed to replace it, which is scheduled for next Tuesday. I've been using a little space heater I bought from Amazon and it works great. I think I'll keep using it, because I trust the gas company guy more than I trust a contractor I've never met before.
