Two years ago, on Dec. 23. my beloved Rebecca Luker died. I still miss her enormously. This just turned up on YouTube, one of my favorite songs.

From DR Ron:
Quote
I spent several hours yesterday afternoon and evening going through HHW.com archives researching some of my Christmas trip posts from previous years.

Quite a revelation, I must say.  Whatever happened to me, anyway?  I used to do stuff and report it here.

We all looked forward to your Christmas trip posts.

What does Karen say on Christmas Eve:

I'd like to see the manger please.

Ha!

DR Ron did any of your old Christmas posts complain about it being this cold?

I am of course hoping the dreaded call does not come in the next few days.....about someone who attended the party testing positive.

Is it just me, or???  Kate Hudson seems to be giving performances as if she were imitating her mom.  I have felt this about some of her other performances, too.

I just think she is her mother's daughter just like I often see Judy in Liza Minnelli.

I don't know if Bruce will remember well enough to have an opinion, and Keith & my brother never see it....yet over the years I have often had people say I remind them of someone.  Once prompted they would name my sister.

After all the work of Thanksgiving dinner last month, I decided to make Christmas a bit easier. Today I'll make stuffed shells and put them in the fridge. Tomorrow I'll make breadsticks and roast some vegetables. So easy.

Smart.

This reminds me of the first time I saw a Cardinal.  It was our first winter in New Jersey, took my breath away.

Tonight I shall be dining at my cousin Debra's (unless something happens before then to change our plans).

I am expecting most esculent chili!

I do hope nothing happens and you have a very nice time.

A week from today, my cousin Butch, his fiancee Sharon, and I shall be dining festively at the Pine Ridge Country Club's New Year's Eve feast.

My dinner will be Caesar Salad, Filet Mignon, a vegetable "medley", and Tiramisu.

We will each pay an arm and a leg, I presume, for the meal.

But, it's New Years Eve, and we will dine early and be home early.  No massive crowds, drunken revelry and seeing the ball drop for us, thanks!!

Been there, done that, over it.

It sounds lovely.

May I reflect for a moment?  This season just isn't the same since my mom and aunt passed away.

It was rough after my mom died in 2018, but we had the family gathering, as always, across the street at my aunt's on Christmas day.

Last year, Christmas was very low key, but we still gathered at that house because my uncle was still there and his children, grandchildren and friends wanted to make sure he had a good Christmas.

Time is cruel.  My uncle passed in February (three months after my aunt passed).  My cousin Debra is determined to continue a tradition at her house on Christmas eve, but her husband is likely spending his last Christmas on earth and these family traditions are, again, being adjusted and will likely be done away with.  New ones will take their place, of course, but memories will crowd out festive tradtions.

Oh, well.   I am not particularly overwrought with emotion about any of this.  I simply feel time moving along, more rapidly now than in the past.

I have thought about all your losses since you moved home, it does change everything.  Thanks goodness you were able to make the move while they were still there for you to spend time with.

That’s good news since I can’t get the splint through any of my coat sleeves.

I know about that.  Fortunately the cold weather clothing for our Greenland trip fit over my cast, though I couldn't get the glove all the way on.  I would tuck a hand warmer in there, but then the heat would make me swell and kind of hurt.  I preferred the pain to the cold ;D

I’m feeling a bit melancholy

I feel this way every year now it is just the two of us.  A couple of times we have gone to L.A. to be with my brother's family.  We haven't done that in a long time.

It’s 21 outside now. The high is expected to be double that.

It's 45° right now, and the high is supposed to get up to a balmy 48°.

Wow, it is warm there.  It is 30 degrees and raining here.  I watched our poor upstairs dog slide on his potty walk.  I was out talkin to them, under our front door awning, when the mail truck pulled up.  The mailman put ice cleats on before getting packages from the truck to deliver.  He said no mail except or packages today.

Christmas Eve afternoon greetings!  We have decorated the shortbread cut-out cookies that I made Thursday and our dinner (cranberry pork roast) is in the crockpot.  I am doing something I’ve never before done on Christmas Eve - watching a football game.  Go, Bengals!

So - there were about 35 folks at the party.....

We all had a good time.  The catered food was Italian and most excellent.  A lot of karaoke and I was tempted to join in, but restrained myself.....were that some others were as self aware.

I have been looking forward to your party report.  I am glad it was fun.

I prefer not to look back on too many Christmases past. I did enjoy going to Germany a few years back because of the time spent with my sister and her family.

And I bet it was beautiful with the decorations.

At halftime I’ll make tomorrow’s pecan pie and after dinner I’ll assemble a Christmas morning breakfast casserole.  Then I’m going to quit cooking for a while.

AS you can see, they look a lot like their Mommy.

Emily on the left is the mother of 4 month old Audrey - who stayed back at the house with Daddy Ryan.

Yes, I noticed :)
