From DR Ron:

Quote
I did, but I always was glad I didn't.  It would have been hell on them with my dad's drinking, and my mom likely wouldn't have been able to keep us all in line.

That is an interesting perspective.  I found at times it helped to have siblings while dealing with my mother, but then my sister always made it worse by causing more trauma in the house.

This is amazing -- it's no more than 70 degrees here, and we've got a nice constant breeze thanks to the hurricane that went to the east of us, and the house is airing out nicely. Truly a fall day.

I just listened to the new Oklahoma! and sent John an email praising it. It's quite excellent, and I put it up there with McGlinn's Show Boat for excellence. By the time Curley and Laurie got to their Act Two reprise of "People Will Say We're in Love" ("Who cares what happens now?"), I was in tears. People are already carping about it on Facebook, but they're wrong.

"People"?  "PEOPLE??   Who are these...these "p e o p l e"?   I'll hunt 'em down and shake 'em until helll won't have 'em!

It may be too early to be certain, but my senses of smell and taste deserted me more than a year ago.

Today, however, I discovered it is time to clean out my refrigerator.  Something has soured.

Tonight, the Hallmark Channel has something new on offer - a romantic comedy with a same-sex couple as the main protagonists.

The people at the next table over are discussing dildoes. Sadly, they’re not talking dancing dildoes.

I had a rather interesting phone call this afternoon.

Five years ago, my cousin Richard gave me a sheet of paper with an inquiry from someone possibly in our family who was seeking information about one of our fathers' half-brothers.  He asked if I knew enough to answer the question, so I told him I'd look into it.

Six months ago, I began seriously looking into my roots on Ancestry.com and much has been revealed.  Not enough, no, but quite a bit.  At that time, I e-mailed this person to let him know I was active on Ancestry at this time and would help if I could.

He called me today, after having not checked his account at Ancestry since i had sent my offer.

We talked for about an hour.  My father was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters.  BUT...his father, my grandfather, had been married previously and had three or five children (not sure at this point) with his first wife.  One of those children was a girl who was part of my grandfather's household while he was married to my grandmother (his first wife died). His sons were all older than MY aunts and uncles, so they didn't really live in the home with them.

This guy has had quite a life.  He has a home in Charlotte NC and in SC, as well.  He started a department store business in his younger years and is comfortable.  He wanted to know about my half-cousin Winston Pulliam.  Winston was in real estate in Biltmore NC (a wealthy adjacent to Asheville NC).  Winston was the son of one of my father's half-brothers...Ed.  Also in Biltmore lived my Uncle George and Aunt Belle, both of whom I loved dearly, and so did Winston who treated them like his own parents.

This guy, whose first name I do not remember, is a bastard son of Ed, Winston's father.  He is seeking as much info as he can find on his dad's side of the family.  I have told him he definitely can PROVE relationship via his DNA which he can provide Ancestry.com, so that may help him out.

We will likely talk again...and meet up at some point the future.

FWIW:  I met Ed only once.  He came to our house in Greenville, asked me if I was LeRoy's boy and then told me he was my uncle.

I called my father to the door and said my Uncle Ed wanted to see him.  I had never seen a look of disgust as deep as the one on my father's face at that time.  He told me I didn't have an Uncle Ed and sent me to my room.

Later, he told me who Ed was and that I was never to open the door to him again.

Since you can't call him Uncle Ed maybe you should call him Mr. Ed.

The most interesting fact - to me - about playwright Paul Osborn, and Indiana native.....is that when he was working with Elia Kazan writing the screen play for EAST OF EDEN....he also happened to know a young New York actor....

He introduced the young actor - also a Hoosier - to Kazan....James Dean.

Or maybe I wrote about this last week here.

Something's happening, Dave......I can feel it......wait a minute.....wait a minute.....
