Marilyn Cooper was being discussed on one of those lesser sites the other day; I remember fondly that she recorded the title of today's notes for Ben Bagley on the album that also featured a thrilling "Blues in the Night" from Jennifer Holliday as well as Fran Jeffries recording of her song from THE PINK PANTHER.  :D

We started this morning with a lovely soft rain shower that lasted about fifteen minutes. Since the sun hadn't really begun to heat things up, this was a nice cool shower, and I only wished it could have continued. No thunder, no lightning. Just soft waves of falling rain. Heaven.

Oh, brother all those choreographers to discuss. Harad to know where to start, and bk has managed to name many that I would have included.

Let's see, Gower Champion.

"The Grand Imperial Cirque d'Paris" and also the opening and closing of CARNIVAL!

"Put on Your Sunday Clothes," "The Waiters' Gallop," and "Hello, Dolly" from HELLO DOLLY.

"Without You" and "The Life of the Party" in THE HAPPY TIME.

the title number from 42nd STREET.

I never got to see BYE BYE BIRDIE or MACK & MABEL in their original productions, so I don't feel I can comment on them.

Michael Bennett:

"Turkey Lurky Time" from PROMISES, PROMISES

"It's Not Where You Start" in SEESAW

"Company," "Side by Side by Side," "Tick Tock" "It's the Little Things You Do Together" in COMPANY

"Who's That Woman" and "The Story of Lucy and Jessie" in FOLLIES

Every musical number in A CHORUS LINE but especially that exciting opening number, "Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen," "One," "The Tap Combination," "One finale."

The ertirety of DREAMGIRLS seemed to be moving, not just the people but those towers, so the whole show seemed like a musical number.

I never saw BALLROOM either, so I can't comment.

I've mixed feelings about the TOD.  My parents were never ones to go to the theater, and since we were LA based, rather than NYC, seeing much of the work of these masters becomes problematic at best.  I did get to see A Chorus Line way back when it played at the now demolished Shubert Theater, and loved it.

AH, The Shubert theatre, the location of my most favorite theatrical experience - the west coast premeire of "Sunset Blvd." with Glenn Close, on of the best evenings of my life.  Also, the home of one of my least favorite evening of theatre, the west coast premiere of "Ragtime" - a show I really wanted to like, but found it WAY too big and I was very overwhelmed. The people who I were with loved it and couldn't understand why I didn't love it.

There was a time when some friends of mine used to trek down to LA for west coast "premieres" of musicals.  Those were good times.  We always would do something "fun" in the area - like the tourist things or maybe Universal Studios or Magic Mountain (on the way there or the way back) - we saw such shows as "The Phantom of the Opera", "Sunset Blvd", "Miss Saigon", "By Jeeves", "Titanic" and "The Lion King" - those were great weekends and really good times.  I also trekked down there for "Martin Guerre" but I didn't bring anyone with me!!  Oh - I also saw "Beauty and the Beast" with the Original Broadway Cast at the Shubert - that trip was just another story, nevermind :)

Lately, there has been much to travel to the LA area for theatre, SF seems to be getting all the new shows or west coast premieres.

That said, I'll miss the Shubert, I know it was a "barn" of a space, but it held some great memories.

Mornin', y'all... You should see the sombre faces moping about the office this morning. None of us are any too happy about those lousy bonuses for which we worked our butts off. Feh!

TOD:

Fosse: "Rich Man's Frug" is brilliant. "Steam Heat," "Hot Honey Rag," "Too Darn Hot," "Big Spender," "Something Better Than This," "Mein Herr," "Take Off With Us," "Sing, Sing, Sing!," "Shoeless Joe From Hannibal, MO" and the Baseball Ballet.

Bennett: "Steppin' to the Bad Side," "Goodbye, Twelve, Hello, Thirteen," the Audition for CHORUS LINE, "Turkey Lurkey Time."

Champion: "Waiter's Gallop," "We're In the Money," "42nd Street."

White: "Marion the Librarian," "Shipoopi"

Robbins: "Small House of Uncle Thomas" just blows me away, "Prologue," "America," "Dance at the Gym," "The Newsboys," "Ya Gotta Have a Gimmick," "To Life (L'Chaim)," "The Bottle Dance," "Tevye's Dream"

Others:

Stroman: "I Got Rhythm," "Slap That Bass," "Little Old Ladyland (Along Came Bialy)"

DeMille: The Carousel Ballet, "Out of My Dreams/Ballet"

Fosse: Geez, where to start. From the movies or THE PAJAMA GAME and DAMN YANKEES:

""I'll Never Be Jealous Again," "Once a Year Day," "Steam Heat," "Hernando's Hideaway."

"Who's Got the Pain," "Shoeless Joe," "Two Lost Souls."

Yes, the challenge dance in MY SISTER EILEEN and his section of "From This Moment On" in KISS ME KATE are wonderful, but was it all Fosse or did Tommy Rall assist in the first and Hermes Pan in the second? "From This Moment On" doesn't look much like Hermes Pan in any of the segments, well, possibly the Bobby Van segment. Hard to know who did what since it all seems to have been collaborative.

SWEET CHARITY: "If My Friends Could See Me Now," "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This," "I'm a Brass Band."

PIPPIN: "Magic to Do" "War Is a Science," "Ordinary Woman."

CHICAGO: well, everything but my favorite is the "Hot Honey Rag."

DANCIN': well, of course all of the dancing is brilliant, but as I think I've mentioned before, I wearied of the concept halfway through, so all the dancing has kind of blurred in my mind and nothing stands out, not even things like "Swing, Swing, Swing" that was re-mounted for FOSSE.

I never saw BIG DEAL and the excerpts in FOSSE  or on the TOnys ("Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar") didn't impress me.

Robbins: WEST SIDE STORY: "The Dance at the Gym" and the "Somewhere Ballet" stick in my mind the most. Bernstein's music is so exciting that the dancing just lifts you out of your seat.

PETER PAN: "I'm Flying"

HIGH BUTTON SHOES: "Keystone Kops Ballet"

GYPSY: "All I Need Is the Girl," "You Gotta Have a Gimmick"

THE KING & I: "Small House of Uncle Thomas" "Shall We Dance?"

FIDDLER: "The Bottle Dance," "Tradition."

Onna White: Well, in the movies of THE MUSIC MAN and OLIVER, I loved "Marian the Librarian," "Shipoopi," "Who Will Buy," and "Om-Pa-Pa."

MAME: "It's Today," "Open a New Window," "Mame," "That's How Young I Feel."

1776: "Sit Down, John," "He Plays the Violin," "Cool, Conservative Men."

If I have some time, I might pop in the William Powell documentary from THE THIN MAN box. I saw the Myrna Loy tribute on TCM some years ago, but I believe the Powell documentary is new to this set. Even if it isn't, I haven't seen it.

DR George, glad you're enjoying THE MUPPET SHOW, Season 1. Don't some of the Muppets look different to their "finished" versions that we're now familiar with. Miss Piggy, for example. Seems like she looked much less the diva in that first year, or is my memory simply playing tricks on me?

DR Jason - If it makes you feel any better, the place where I've worked for close to fourteen years doesn't give bonuses at all, just a small token Christmas gift.  And only one out of the six places I've worked in my working life ever gave a substantial bonus.  I can't say anyhting about the world in general, but on the basis of what I've personally experienced, bonuses are not the norm.  I know that might not make you feel better financially if you've come to rely on the bonus, but I've gotten so used to a "no bonus" world out there.  That doesn't put any more money in your pocket, but maybe it'll make you feel a little better about your company vs. the world out there, I hope?

Thanks for the links DR Jennifer...I am looking very forward to this next Amazing Race....this should be a fun one (well, all the seasons have been fun!).

I wonder how the challenges will work since there are 4 players. Will all players have to stick together? Can they split up?  Will 1, 2, 3 or 4 players have to do the challenges where before only 1 of the 2 had to?

Since some are kids as little as 8, i'm guessing there won't make it so EVERY competitor has to do challenges alone.

I also wonder if the little kids will make it easier or harder.  I mean they will get tired and cranky.  And they won't be able to help think.  But they may be able to see the markers that the others don't.  And kids can run fast. So i guess they won't slow the team down.

So looking at the group, which team would you think would do the best?

Yes i saw that last week. They have one former NFL player.  But an interesting rumor (not sure if it is still a rumor) is that steph and bobby jon are the 2 additional tribemembers who have yet to be named.

Apparently they announced there would be 18 on the show, but only have pics of 16.

That is a difficult question. I will have to wait and see the personalities of the contestants...I think having some little kids on the teams will certainly be a challenge at times, but will be very educational for those kids, and will make it even more enjoyable for families at home who like to watch this show together.

Interesting and cool, BK, that Buñuel would admit to that act of caprice and whim. I have a feeling that sort of thing happens all the time, and when the critics take something as "genius," the Directors just go along with that rather than admit that something just happened for no particular reason.

I never did find out who sang for Gloria Grahame in SONG OF THE THIN MAN. The IMDB was no help, saying she sang the song "It's Not So Easy to Forget," but that is clearly not her voice.

Actually, it sounds a lot like Gloria DeHaven, but I can't find any information saying she ever dubbed for anyone (She was an MGM contract player at the time and could have done it).
