There was a highly praised Islamic romance novel of a few years back about a woman running a family restaurant threatened by a capitalist who wanted the property. She falls for the guy’s son. Anyone remember the name?

Google has helped answer my own question: Hana Kahn Carries On.

I’m listening to Against the Currant, which sounds as if it has the same plot, only this family is from the West Indies.

I remember a musical call Theda Bara and the Frontier Rabbi. Jeff Hochshartner was one of the writers. It had promise but just disappeared.

Theda Bara and the Frontier Rabbi got a really nice review in the New York Times back when it opened in New York.

Thanks, Fred. I think I had a demo tape of that show somewhere. It’s probably on cassette though.

I can't find the Vamp sketch where Cher played Theda Bara, but here are Cher's song sections where the three Vamps were Bonnie (of Bonnie and Clyde), Theda Bara and Sadie Thompson.

Theda Bara sung about by Cher at 0:39

On This Day in 1933, the Lone Ranger was introduced to radio audiences on WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan.

Maybe coincidentally, the next day in 1933, there were the first reports of someone interrupting the William Tell Overture with "Hi-yo, Silver!"

That song, which I learned from George Segal’s LP “A Touch of Ragtime,” was my intro to Theda Bara.

Mine was from the song "In the Movies," sung by Marilyn Cooper on the BK produced Unsung Sondheim, written for SATURDAY NIGHT.

From DR Jrand:

Quote
I went down to visit my knee-replaced brother.  He seems to be doing okay.  It's been six days since the surgery.

He is in some pain....but he has some medication and recovery time is about six weeks, they tell him.

He declares that he is going to mow my yard next summer because he kept watching me all last year and it inspired him to get his new knees so he could get around as well as I do....

I am glad he is doing as well as expected.  Some pain at this point seems normal.  I've know a couple of people who were in a lot of pain which was not normal.

It is very nice that you inspired him to improve his health.

It was also just reported that three-time Tony winner Hinton Battle passed away yesterday at only 67.  He won his three Best Featured Actor in a Musical Tonys for "Sophisticated Ladies," "The Tap Dance Kid" and "Miss Saigon."
