There is readings from Isaiah, followed by a reading from John, a short prayer, a chant, 2 verses sung from a hymn and one of the candles is extinguished and the overhead lights dimmed further.

Then that is carried out of sight behind the altar wall and a door is slammed behind the wall, symbolizing the sealing of the tomb.

The congregation departs in silence and the dark, our practice not to speak until we’ve crossed the street off the church property .

It’s a very solemn and moving service and I have been one of the two readers for the past 15 + years.

When the Vixter was here she used to read the New Testament passages and I the Old, but since she moved I now read the New Testament part and another member reads the old.

After the congregation has departed and after a small time of meditation , we who were part of the service then prepare the sanctuary for Easter morning.

So we get to replace all the black hangings with white, install candles on the pews, and full the chancel with lilies.

I must get moving now. Breakfast and then out to the train, I am seeing the matinee performance of Brooklyn Laundry at the Manhattan Theatre Club.

At the service I participated in last night, the choir had prepared a multi-movement work based on the 7 last words, and sang one movement at a time in between the scripture readings.

They did the candles, as well, although they couldn't dim the lights so much, or the choir wouldn't have been able to read their music.

You know what?

When DR Elmore gets up on stage and talks, he sounds pretty damned smart.   8)

He had a very receptive audience and a pretty good talk host, even if she did try at first to pronounce Robert Russell Bennett's surname as Benét. But the talk was entertaining and enlightening and just what we all needed in preparation for watching (and especially listening to) the ballet. It went off beautifully, and at the intermission when DR Elmore was spoken of in the most glowing terms on the stream itself, our audience let him know exactly how much his contributions were appreciated. In my view, it was a rewarding time for all.

I sat with Rob Berman and adopted son Joshie and their other friends, and they all went on about how much damned music there really is in a ballet, and how wonderful the orchestration was. DR Elmore's inspirations, such as making one number a tango, another a Charleston, etc., and his scoring for a wide selection of instruments (for a classical ballet) like piano, guitar and banjo, a drum set in addition to a standard array of percussion, were just perfect. If there are details he'd like to further improve, that's fine, but this was a SUCCESS and that conclusion was unanimous.

And the reimagined ballet itself? I think it was wonderful and that all the "creatives" had their collective heads in just the right places for this one.

I agree! I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing him at Encores a few years ago!

I am truly disappointed that I couldn’t attend.  I hope the talk was recorded and can be found on YouTube

Our choir and organ are in a loft at the rear of the church so they have book lights which can’t be seen below .

The final duet, sung in the dark is sung acapella

Thank you, DR ChasSmith, for the in-person report from last night.  I was watching the livestream along with y’all and teared up at Doug’s remarks about DR Elmore in the intermission video.

It looks like I'm not going to be "in the zone" for the forthcoming total solar eclipse.

I imagine - or rather, I hope - they will leave the intermission features intact for these next two livestreams.

The ballet was the perfect antidote to how Richard and I had spent the afternoon.  We attended the “Tennebrae” conducted by our community’s chaplain.  Now, I’m fully aware that Good Friday is not supposed to be festive, but this was especially depressing.  Most of the other attendees were from the assisted living and memory care units, including 3 women we knew 30-40-50 years ago who didn’t recognize us yesterday  :'(
