Yes, that is me at the end of Jason's album.  It was an "impromptu" bit that came when we were mixing the album.

I can't remember a birthday present as such that impressed me, but my last lover gave me my first and only surprise party back in the mid-90s. I was in rehearsal for MAN OF LA MANCHA at the time, and we were stopping at a restaurant for a quick dinner because I had to get to rehearsal so was unprepared that this huge party was being catered in one of their celebration rooms. (He had cleared with the director that I would be very late getting to rehearsal.) A total surprise and certainly the most memorable birthday I ever celebrated.

These days, I tend to forget the birthdays or wish silently that everyone else would forget!  :)

For ask BK day: Why is it that this is Guy Haines' website and yet he never posts?

Also, if you could recast LIL ABNER today, who would you cast? (PS: let us hope that rumor of Lil Abner on DVD in 2004 is true!!)

I can't even get Guy Haines to REGISTER let alone post.  What a dweeb.

I would cast anyone who was "right" for Li'l Abner.  I'm actually badgering a local group here to do a concert version of it so I can direct.  Who knows if that will happen or not, but it sure would be fun.

Oh, okay - the difference between "published" and published!  Got it.

I learned all about ASCAP ratings in a Benjamin Kritzer way!  ;D

It's ASK BK and DEAR READER DAY
Now, since i have a leisurely day off (mom's health) i thought I would ask one and all about their favorite performances from two diverse screen stars:
1.  Shirley MacLaine:

2.  Sissy Spacek:

Favorite films? Least favorite? Why and wherefore?
Discuss amongst yourselves.

Best birthday present: For my 40th I was taken to Las Vegas for a day and night, given moolah to gamble with, and it was a lovely time.

Stop the presses!  BK is over 40! Oh, wait - - we knew that.   ;D

I don't really have a favorite Sissy Spacek performance. In fact I have never been a fan of hers.

My favorite Shirley McClaine (not a big fan either, really) performance would be THE CHILDREN'S HOUR. Love that movie and I cry, cry, cry at the ending every time!

I'll answer my own questions later, but speaking of dvd releases, why hasn't Universal released this one?

Shirley, Michael Caine and Herbert Lom romp through this ming-boggling adventure.  It's been ages since I've seen it.

DR TD - such choices to make! :P

For Ms Spacek I would have to say Coal Miner's Daughter, of course.  In most bio flicks the ghost of the subject intrudes, but now I am still surprised when I see Loretta Lynn and she doesn't look like Sissy!  And a second performance In the Bedroom - she was that woman, a living breathing real person!

Shirley.  ;D  You said favorites, so I will say Some Came Running and Ask Any Girl.

Is that Topkapi?

Yes, TD, I love GAMBIT, too. Lots of twists and turns that are totally unexpected. That and TOPKAPI were for their day mind boggling movies.

Favorite Shirley as leading lady: SWEET CHARITY

Favorite Shirley as character actress: STEEL MAGNOLIAS or POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE.

Favorite Sissy: COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER by a country mile!  :)

Favorite Birthday presents:
Well, I would be remiss if I didn't note that on my 6th birthday, an older cousin gave me the original Broadway cast recording of THE MUSIC MAN - - my first cast album!  Look where it got me!

The two New York Birthdays would have to be mentioned, too:
First year, first run, first cast of LES MISERABLES.
Fortieth Birthday:  Julie in VICTOR/VICTORIA, Jim Stanek giving me a tour of the set of A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, performing the majority of my cabaret DREAMERS after hours at DON'T TELL MAMA'S (I was the only one singing, so the managemen kept buying me drinks to make me sing more) and that cute German guy at the bar at Don't Tell Mama's. . .and, btw, when I drink, I don't get drunk, but, when I'm drunk, I'm beautiful. . .get it? got it? good.

I just saw on Amazon. Com that APPLAUSE is coming out next week on DVD. No, not the Lauren Bacall musical but the early 1930 talkie with Helen Morgan directed by Rouben Mamoulian. I had no idea the film was even still in existence. I've never seen it, but I've read about it for many years.

Oh, my, this curiosity plus the next box set of SHERLOCK HOLMES features (including my favorite THE HOUSE OF FEAR) coming out next week. I guess I'll be subsisting on bread and water for the next week. These are must-haves.

I have not heard of APPLAUSE, but I am intrigued!

HOUSE OF FEAR is a good SH film. Is PEARL OF DEATH part of this next group of DVDs?

I saw APPLAUSE once on TCM, I think.  It is kind of a semi-talkie with several silent sequences, and I can't remember if my overall impression was good or not.  Hmmmmmmmm......

What is wrong with these kids today?  I agree with BK – their parents and the media.  I was at the laundromat on Monday afternoon and in walks this young man, probably fourteen to sixteen; his girlfriend, maybe 14, but well-developed; and the girl’s mother.  Now the young man might have been attractive, but it was difficult to tell with the fourteen piercings and the pants hanging down close to his knees.  The young  lady was wearing the tightest pair of jeans I have ever seen that weren’t painted on, plus a skin-tight top that clearly exposed her bare midriff and her nipples.  The entire time that they were there, the young lady continued to make comments to her boyfriend such as, Do you like looking at my body? and Maybe I just need to give you a good massage.  All this time she was either hanging provocatively on his waist, or sliding down on to her knees in front of him.  Meanwhile, Mom finished loading the wash and then sat reading, occasionally chuckling at her daughter’s comments.

Now, I don’t consider myself(an Oliver reference) a prude by any stretch, but I felt like I was in the middle of a porno film.  What kind of mother sits there while her underage daughter seduces her boy friend in the middle of a public establishment?

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JASON!!!![/move]

(I had found a really cute birthday smilie but the computer at school won't let me past it so I shall have to give it to you belatedly!)

Emily--that "mature" post was hilarious!  I can't give you any karma right now cause of that darned 72 hour rule, but my heart is giving you karma!

SWW--WB!  I'm sorry to hear that you haven't been feeling well lately.  I am sending you good vibes so you beat your depression!

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[/move]

BK--You simply must convince Guy Haines to post.  I mean, I know he's shy (oh a OUAM reference) but is there any way you could make him post something with a book or sheet music covering his face???

I would answer the DR questions, but since I am NOT a 10th grader in study hall, I have to do some real studying!

I am mature....really....*giggles loudly*

Actually, my favorite Shirley MacLaine films are My Geisha with Yves Montand and What A Way to Go with the Entire World.   But really there are so many of her films that I enjoy.  Two for the Seasaw, Can-Can, and The Turning Point are all right up there, near the top.

Least favorite:  Probably Postcards from the Edge.

I am not a big Sissy Spacek fan, but I did enjoy her in Carrie and in Missing.

Least:  Possibly, Raggedy Man.

I'll come back sometime when being mature is  not a joke or something to be made fun of. Goodbye.

Can someone tell me what just happened (reference above)?

Totally perplexed.

I, too, am perplexed - was it comedy?  Serious?  I didn't see anything that should have caused anything untoward.

I've seen worse than what TCB describes.  Well, if they see Britney behaving like that they assume it's fine for them to act like that.  We all sound like old fogeys but I would have sounded like this when I was a teenager.
