DR Jeanne, your CD inquiry raises a lot of questions: what kind of music does your friend like? classical orchestral? classical vocal? any particular composer or singer?crossover? pop? jazz? country? holiday? show tunes?
I'd be very happy to suggest a few things, but I need more help from you.
The backstory:
She says she grew up listening to the big R&H musicals, but also likes Indie Something I Never Heard Of. She said she likes fiddle music, so last year I gave her the lovely A Fiddler’s Holiday with the Jay Ungar and Molly Mason Family Band. (Ashoken Farewell was used as the theme for Ken Burns’ film The Civil War.) when she opened it she said, “I never heard of them!”, as if to say “They can’t be any good.” So I’m not trying to educate her or greatly expand her musical knowledge, just find something that she will relate to and find acceptable. She listens to KUSC (classical music) at the office and she likes that, but doesn’t recognize any of it. I don’t think she’s a jazz fan, but she said she likes the blues, which surprises me. I’m thinking classical or Broadway might be the best bet.
