Strawberries and blueberries are The Berries in my book. Blackberries and raspberries run a close second, and anything else is probably something I've only had in jams. But I do love them, and bananas go right along with them.

When I go on a cereal binge, I try to make sure I also have bananas and strawberries and blueberries. Those three things in a good cereal (like a good raisin bran with those crunchy oat clusters) are a feast. The raisins, like the bananas, go right along with berries. I love it all.

Something exquisite that I haven't had in in many years is "berries and cream":  the aforementioned bananas and strawberries and blueberries, probably the others as well, in a bowl of real cream with a light sprinkling of maybe brown sugar or possibly honey as a sweetener -- if you even need a sweetener with the natural sweetness of everything and the cream. Take me there, baby. I'd be afraid of getting hooked if I started having that now.

I love any kind of berry, but raspberries have long been my favorite. I love them drenched in heavy cream.

Of course, I also love hard to find anything, so the appeal of gooseberries and red and black currants are high, too. I remember being in seventh heaven on my first day in Venice when I found red currants at a farmers market. My sister Brigitte thought I was crazy, but I ate those while walking through the streets alongside the canals.

We used to grow both gooseberries and red currants, but the birds always got more than we did.

In Texas, we got dewberries, which are a type of blackberry that grows close to the ground. I harvested a bunch of those one year. Made cobbler and jam. I don’t know if my back would be up for that anymore.

I’ve got blueberries planted this year. A few leaves have appeared. Here’s hoping for fruit.

Do any of y'all ever get those little "splits" in the skin of your fingers during the dry air of winter? And they're so tiny but they hurt like HELL?

I never did until ten years ago. I remember what I was doing at the time, so the time frame is accurate. In comparing notes (see what I did there?) with other musicians, I found it to be a common painful annoyance. Our fingers are always active on expensive toys so it's not convenient to keep moisturizing them, and the little cuts last forever.

Anyhoo, I've had one on the tip of my right index finger for the past week or so, and that's a pretty important finger in piano playing so it gets no relief. And today is the big double header:  a two-hour rehearsal at one school and a performance at another. I can favor it (a.k.a. fake it) at the rehearsal, no big deal there, but the performance is The Little Mermaid in which you almost literally never stop playing. It's not quite Les Miz in that regard, but the second act goes on FOREVER and I will surely be bandaging and nursing my poor little finger tonight.

Vibes that your fingers make it through the performance!

I have my quarterly doctor's appointment at the VA.  It's quarterly owing to my hypertension disability rating (happened while I was in service).  This is the appointment for which I did labs a week ago.

I don't expect anything major to come out of it, but it is next door to Panera Breads, and I'm going to get one of the other Asiago bagel sammiches.  This time "might" be the chicken one.

Doctor's visit vibes for Ron.

Sadly, I have. Strawberries lately don’t taste like strawberries anymore. We used to go pick strawberries on Memorial Day every year when I was growing up. The flavor was incredible. When I was tiny, I ate more than I picked. I wonder how much spray I ingested.

This may be related to those cuts we seem to get on our fingers as we get older.

I have finished kitty cleanup, made the bed, taped up Stella's sleeping carton, dealt with an obnoxious Medicare card phone call, and put the toys back in the plastic tub I kept by my bedside last night. Lying opn the teacart, Annabelle has been pushed hither and yon to her utter delight. I'm exhausted.

Strawberries and blueberries with ice cream or yogurt. I don't dislike raspberries, but I prefer strawberries and blueberries. When I was a child, we had an insurance man who lived halfway between Middletown and Hamilton, Ohio, on Route 4. He was an older, very proper and polite gentleman, and he would stop by every three months for my parents' quarterly life and property insurance payments. He had currant bushes on his property, and his summer visits included gifts of freshly picked currants, which sent my maternal grandmother, who often lived with us, untoi the kitchen for a week of cooking up currant jelly. God, it was good.

I have no memory of who originally gifted me with that huckleberry jam, but it's sure good on a toasted English muffin.
