Pavlova isn't my favorite but I won't say no to it.  I believe it is popular in the UK.

The dish in back is leftover custard with pear flavor added.

Yum.

DR John G, I have the two Kurt Weill Revisited albums. But I do think I need to pick up Lerner Revisited now.

Saturday afternoon greetings!  After staying up last night to watch Auburn eliminate Michigan from March Madness, I slept until 9:30 this morning.  That’s quite late for me.

DR George, it is a lotta Weill, but it's 10 down, 13 to go, according to the count of the Kurt Weill Edition.

I have to say I never understood the criticisms leveled at this Love Life production before it even opened. Love Life is vastly overwritten, with no recording or published score to provide a "definitive" version from the creators' viewpoint. It's also a modular show which makes it easier to plug and play scenes. The requirements for specialty performers in different numbers also influences what to leave in and what to leave out.

I think using the children instead of the magician worked well. It wouldn't surprise me if cutting the madrigal was intended to increase the emotional impact of Part 2 by starting off with a scene rather than a more distancing vaudeville act. The remaining acts in Part 2 seem more emotionally connected to the story, especially the restored Susan's Dream (restored from the final Broadway running order, that is.)

The New York Times critic thinks this sentimentalized the story too much. That critic is perhaps the first in history to call any production of Love Life too sentimental. But I understand the criticism though I disagree with it, and it's based on actually seeing the production being critiqued.

Now I have to get over to the Stanford Music Library to see the critical edition in print.

All in all, if this turns out to be the only version of Love Life I ever get to see, I'm glad it was this one. This show rests so heavily on the two stars and they were just fantastic.

Yeah. The clips show their voices are ridiculously good.

Around 1993, John McGlinn wanted to record a complete Love Life with Judy Kaye and Thomas Hampson for EMI-Angel. He had the great copyist Christine Ambrose prepare a vocal score from Weill's full scores. I never knew exactly what happened to prevent it: the Oklahoma! debacle that ended his EMI contract or EMI's insistence to only record one CD of excerpts. I have one of the copies of Christine's vocal score, and I suspect it may be the source for the newly published score. I'll find out when my copy of the new score arrives. To finish off his contract, John did record a nice chunk of Love Life and The Firebrand of Florence on Hampson's "Kurt Weill on Broadway" album for EMU.
