Today we discussed The Godfather Part II watching scenes from the movie. There's a lot of obliqueness and ambiguity in it which made for fun discussions.

But when I was a kid in 1968, "Go Get 'Em Tigers" was my favorite song:

Yesterday I had a great Zoom interview with the CEO of Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, who is retiring this year. He’d been in charge there since 1986.  One of my favorite places.

Great.

Bob Seger's 2+2=? was one of the first rock antiwar songs:

One of the more spectacular photos from DR JANE.

Did she/Keith take that photo? Or was that from a plane flying over all the balloons?

Keith took all of the photos except the ones of us.  I attempted to copy and paste Keith's wonderful description of our morning from my FB page. Maybe someone else can do that.

The two Don Ellis albums I got at Korvette's were Live at Fillmore and Tears of Joy. Fillmore is the height of his rock period, then Tears of Joy moves to the string-based band he used for the rest of his career. Both are great starting points for exploration. My other two favorite albums are Soaring and Live at Montreux.

“Will You Be Staying After Sunday?” by the Peppermint Rainbow is a great one in the Mamas & Papas style.

I think the first Godfather film is worth it; it's really amazing. Part II is too dark for me, but I liked it better watching it for the second time this week when I wasn't surprised by where it was going. Part III is fine but not up to the level of the others.

Don Ellis also scored the two French Connection movies. The Connection album traded in on that success but it only has two great original tracks, including the big band version of the theme. The rest of the songs are mediocre rock covers.

You know what else was great?  The main hits by the Buckinghams. “Don’t You Care,” “Susan,” “Kind of a Drag.”

Did anyone mention The Turtles yet? "Happy Together" and "Elenore" are my favorites from them.

Gotta love the Turtles. And their Leslie Bricusse-penned theme from Guide for the Married Man.

Aretha has a lot of great songs in the 60s but I think my favorite is "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man."

Can't go wrong with those! I guess the 1971+ strings band resonates even more with me because it's so different than other big bands.

I was introduced to Don Ellis at music camp when we played "Final Analysis" in our jazz band one week, then a few days later saw the modern dance group do a dance on "Loss." I couldn't believe those were both by the same guy!

Don Ellis is perfect for adventurous jazz band kids. What with his wild time signatures. Not sure why he was never “cool” among real jazzbos. Too much big band, pop experiments, vocals, I guess. Most have sold a lot though. Easy to find in the dollar bins.

I think it was too much rock, too much flash. Jazz was getting swamped by rock at the time so there was a defensive reaction.
