I used to like shopping for non-food items, but I don’t anymore. Except for books. I am always up for a trip to a bookstore.

Good news, JRand. And how do you feel about, other than cold?

Yesterday was sheer hell with snow cleanup, and I just did another round with the snow blower to clean up and widen the driveway a bit more. This really is hell.

Our plow guy had his own horrible time moving the stuff. He's got an older Jeep SUV with plow attached, and it's great, but this storm has laid down a challenge for even the heavier equipment. They move into it several feet, dump it as best they can to the side, then back up a bit and move a few more feet. It's just bad.

No problem seeing everyone's pictures here, and the notes page has worked fine so far. I still have to manually reload to update it, but we're used to that.

TOD

I've known and loved many kinds of supermarket or grocery store, a few of which I look back on with true fondness. Let's see what I can recall from the main areas I've lived in...

The last place I lived in Cleveland, actually Cleveland Heights which I loved (and probably still would), had a family run grocery store called Russo's that was walking distance from us, had a cozy vibe, and it had a wonderful floor-to-ceiling selection in every department. I have missed that store since 1972. It was there for years, but is now no more. Whenever I see it mentioned in one of the Cleveland Facebook groups, the same sentiment is expressed by everyone who knew it.

In L.A. I twice lived close enough to a Hughes Market for that to be my regular store. I was a 3- or 4-block walk from the one at Highland Ave. and Franklin, and I find lots of people loved that one, too. The other one for me was in Beverly Hills across the street from Chasen's, a five-minute bicycle ride from my apartment.

When I lived in Redondo Beach I went bigger, enjoying the larger and more modern Ralph's on PCH in Torrance. That's a major chain and is still there. Following that, during the year I lived in Chicagoland, I first shopped at a Dominicks which is no more, then the larger and more modern Jewel. (Are they still around? It was always "Jewel/Osco" because they usually had an Osco Drugs right there.) BUT...the wonderful apartment complex I lived in had its own White Hen Pantry. Those were all over town then, but having one on your own "property" was like having the most wonderful bodega there, day and night. I miss that whole place.

Finally, back in L.A., I lived in West Hollywood where my store was a 2-block walk, the Mayfair on Santa Monica at N. Kings Road. That was a lovely store, and I see it's now a Gelson's. It was that nice mid-size jernt similar to that first Hughes Market in Hollywood. By now, though, I was also stopping in regularly at the nearest Trader Joe's for whatever they had that was unique to them, and that continues to this day.

So do I have that kind of favorite store now, in Connecticut? I find now that it's more a case of whatever you've gotten comfortable with, and the the current one is a ShopRite. Does it take the place of the stores described above? No. It's a good store. But I don't find that "magic" at any of them around here. I love the "IGA" chain of very small, very packed, markets. They are few and far between around here, but they come close to having the feel of a really nice NYC bodega or other small market. And yes, they do have the "magic".

On my first visit to San Antonio, for the job interview, I visited Central Market. I knew I’d like living here when I saw the golden raspberries in the produce section.

As for favorite sections of any of those stores... that's a tough one. If I really liked the store, I liked it all.

But in the very few I knew that had a magazine/book section, yes, I would have been all over that just like BK. I don't literally remember any records in those stores, but I have the vague sense that that's where my mom or dad picked up a few records we acquired when I was a kid.

I remember a farmers market in Venice that had fresh red currants and gooseberries for sale. I was happy shopping while munching on a pint of each.

There was a fish market in San Jose, Costa Rica, where you could sample ceviches made from their fish at eat stand. It is also where I saw a waitress cut those flimsy napkins at the fold to double the number.

I like the deli section and the bakery section - but there is something to look at everywhere at WalMart - even if it's just the people.

This is wonderful.  I also think it is wonderful that you volunteer there.

Bruce, the site was still down at the time I normally am posting, not that I would have returned last night since I got home from my book discussion later than usual.  I had a nice long chat with one of my newer neighbors who is in the group.

From Bruce,

That began at a very early age with our two great local markets, Big Town and Daylight, and later, A&P.

I never shopped at those markets and have no idea where they were located.

I'd fallen asleep watching TV and woke up, and remembered that I wanted to check what happened here at HHW with the update.

Most of my brothers and sisters have their groceries delivered.

But I like to see what I'm getting and look at the specials and sales...and see folks. If there is no one in the checkout line I always go to let Joan check me out - otherwise I use the self checkout where Erin is always very helpful and keeps me up to date on what's playing at the local movie house. Tony never says much, but he is pretty quick to help if I have trouble - usually not speaking a word.

Joan was named after Joan Davis because I Married Joan was her mother's favorite show and two weeks ago she had to call AAA to bring her a battery for her car.

Yes, I am a patient of DR Rick from the Progressive Insurance Commercials.

I'm with you wanting to see what I am getting.  I also like that you know your checkers.

BAD NEWS.

My brother hurt his back and will not be by today.

That will NOT do. THAT WILL JUST NOT DO.

I am going out and doing about 15 or twenty minutes of shoveling.....coming back in for awhile and then going out again.  I may be done by 1 p.m. or so.

Oh no!  Vibes you are ok.  Keep warm.
