Now we're cookin' with knock knock jokes.  Is there a book of knock knock jokes?  I'm watching Borsalino and Company, starring Mr. Alain Delon.  It's a sequel to Borsalino - I haven't seen Borsalino so I'm having a tough time knowing what the HELL is going on.  Perhaps one fine day Borsalino will be on DVD, too.

But somebody has to start it for me!

Well, I spent a large portion of the afternoon with Ms. Barbra Streisand in two TV specials: BELLE OF 14TH STREET and COLOR ME BARBRA.

First off, whoever mastered the original videotapes to DVD used the entire image all the way to the edges meaning that on the left side of the picture, I see video image artifacting not meant to be seen when I watch the 4:3 picture on a 16:9 TV. When I expanded the picture to fill the screen, the edges get lopped off, of course, and then the offending artifact isn't there. I'm thinking on a regular TV, the normal overscan would obscure this stuff, but when you're seeing everything possible to see, the lines running down the left side are definitely there.

That said, it's easy to see why BELLE OF 14TH STREET didn't make a big hit. Jason Robards can barely carry a tune, and he sings a fair amount in the first vaudeville sequences. As a tribute to vaudeville, complete with a (too) lengthy excerpt from THE TEMPEST, I can imagine the at home TV audience just would have gotten bored with it before it was half over. Naturally, they'd miss the concert sequence at the close which is the best thing about it. (Barbra also sings an entire number  - "Liebestraum" - in her head voice, stronger than I ever would have thought possible, even for a singer with her unique talent.)

COLOR ME BARBRA was as wonderful as always. And the DVDs are given three possible soundtrack choices: original mono, 2.0 stereo, and Dolby 5.1.

I'll watch MY NAME IS BARBRA and ...OTHER MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS at other points over the weekend.

I spent the remainder of the afternoon thus far watching another American Masters PBS special, this one on LUCILLE BALL.

Dissecting her talent in her various Lucy shows, the documentary was very entertaining. But it mentioned nothing about WILDCAT. Nothing about the handful of films she made after her LUCY success including one huge hit (YOURS, MINE, AND OURS) and one huge flop (MAME).

Another big surprise: when I went to the grocery store today around noon, I expected it to be packed. Nope! It was almost empty. I guess folks were doing shopping of a different kind. I was in and out in two minutes and got a space almost right at the front of the packing lot.

Thanks, BK....that knock-knock works best in person when folks are too busy thinking of another joke to realize that they can't start someone else's knock-knock joke.

I was out for a while this morning.  Moderate traffic everywhere, nothing major (last night, however, there were huge traffic jams on the freeways as late as 10:30 p.m.).

I went to a large Safeway to shop (my local one is ALWAYS out of some things I regularly buy).  Had a good time...found some great stuff...I have my pork loin cooking right now.  And I've some Brunswick stew heating on the stove for my lunch.

I have gotten shipping notices from Amazon.com and DeepDiscountDVD.com....TONS of DVDs have shipped to me.

I'm absolutely aghast at the quantity that will, undoubtedly, arrive in one delivery.

Somebody STOP me!

I have a large order from Deep Discount to come, and that's it for big orders.

I have bought used CDs and DVDs one or two at a time from various places.

Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?  Where, for example, has dear reader Jane gone?  Absent.  Where has La Pogue gone?  Absent.  At this rate we are sure to achieve an all-time low unless we start gettin' some postin' goin' on - we need to here about meals and events and whatnot.

"City Of God" was an amazing film. The DVD EXtra was fascinating and gave much food for thought re the connection between guns and drugs and so much more. A whole new world and a different way of seeing and understanding the poverty traps.

I'm now looking forward to seeing what the Director does with "The Constant Gardener".  I guess the public will see the plot and characters as being ponderous ! Just as the public didn't "get" "the Shipping News" either.
