BK, I'm still wondering if you ever got around to watching TALES OF HOFFMAN? I asked you this last week, and if you answered, I must have missed it. Interested to know if the transfer is as stunning as I would expect it to be.

Here it is:  The Jack Randall Earles King Kong Report:

"Kong is climbing the Empire State Building.  That is all."

I wish they had used that line from the original.

Okay....here goes.

Good performances by Jack Black, Naomi Watts, and Colin Hanks.  The CGI is amazing.

Adrien Brody has a hellacious honker that is VERY distracting and he must play in film biographies of either Jimmy Durante or Danny Thomas or BOTH very soon now.

Other performances are also good.

The film is TOO long....just too long.  Over three hours....three hours and fifteen minutes including the coming attractions that I was subjected to.

Once we get to New York everything works.  Well worth seeing, but it's a long drink of water!

THE MUSIC OF THIS FILM IS A COMPLETE FAILURE.  The best part musically are a few samples of Max Steiner's score.  Kong doesn't have a BIG theme to match the 3-note descending theme that he had in '33 (it is sampled ONCE) - and the rest is pretty but doesn't seem to fit the film.  Too bad.

This is a film to see once, and MAYBE buy the DVD on sale.....no need to see it more than once at the theatre.

The two other people in the theatre for the 1 pm showing seemed to enjoy it as much as I did.

Thanks, DR JRand, for the KING KONG report. I suspect I'll feel similarly if and when I see it.

Just read the VARIETY review of this Sunday's ONCE UPON A MATTRESS. As we suspected, a misfire all around.

I'm sure I'll watch since not many musicals make it to be big or small screen any more, but having done this show myself, I have a great fondness for it and am sad they wasted this golden opportunity to do it right.

Here's the VARIETY pic. Sorry for the quality; I tried resizing it larger and, of course, it loses resolution when you do that.

BK when you write as screen play does it include "stage directions" or is that something that only a director adds?

Yes, I try to make it as visual as possible, so that the reader can "picture" the movie as they're reading it.  Smart directors will just take what they like from the writer's stage directions if they're top-notch and really clever and visual.  Dumb directors (most working directors today) will completely ignore them and do their own thing.

I've been saving my King Kong music report for Friday, but here it is:  Awful.  Typical musical score of today - no themes, just droning, or thumping, or New Age, or thumping - total crap from start to finish (based on the CD - haven't seen the film yet).  And yes, the obligatory for no reason choir and the obligatory for no reason boy soprano.  Blechhh.

I always read the stage directions...although they are sometimes not practical for a Thrust Stage....but they are usually great suggestions!

The New TV Guide article about ONCE UPON  A MATTRESS seemed designed to discourage viewers from tuning in.  This is the first and only copy I will buy of this "magazine" - it was on sale this week for 99 cents.  I want my money back.

I assumed that's what he meant, 20 minutes  for an electrician to install lighting!   :D

Well, I'm sure I can't imagine for what else he'd be paying the electrician!   ::)

(Shocking, absolutely shocking!)

Thanks for the KING KONG review. I wonder how it compares to KING KONG ESCAPES?  ;D

Over 3 hours long! Boy, even this Bollywood Boy will have a difficult time with that!

The movie, for me, will depend a lot on how Ann Darrow is portrayed. If they give this 1930s gal a 21 Century attitude I will likely be disappointed.

MATTh...horse racing of course, but I must say it...how in tarnation could you sit through all those episodes of GOOD TIMES!

Everytime I come across the show on TV Land I stop and begin to watch....and I am always surprised at how much I can't stand the show! LOL.

Now GOOD TIMES was one of my favorite shows back when I was a kid, but I tell you what I cannot for the life of me figure out why...I LOVE Esther Rolle and I love some of the other actors in the show...but just not in THAT show.

On the other hand I still laugh out loud to MR. ED, so what do I know. 8)

She's a 30's gal, MBARNUM, Naomi Watts' performance is terrific.  There is a nod here and there to something more modern, but it isn't too jarring.

Another thing about the music.....the tiddly wink music that is played for the introduction to the New York performance is awful.  And of course the conductor and musicians seem to playing something completely different than what we're hearing.  Maybe they have Howard Shore's music on their stands!

But this is the sequence that THEN cribs verbatim from Steiner - only goes to show how threadbare and WRONG this score is.

Shakespeare Day on TCM.  I am watching JULIUS CAESAR.

I always think of the story that director Joseph Manciewicz told that Marlon Brando sent him a recording of him doing some of Mark Antony's speeches, and that Joseph listened and thought the tapes were from June Allyson.

Sometimes, it's hard to explain exactly why a person becomes fond of something that leaves another cold. I can't explain it either. I just know that it makes me laugh.

I suspect we all have TV shows and films that the world judges lame or lousy which we just love (for any number of reasons).

GOOD TIMES happens to be one of my guilty pleasures (along with MYRA BRECKINRIDGE, VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, etc.)

I've always loved this version of JULIUS CAESAR. I wish Warners would bring it out on DVD. I have it on a commercial videotape.
