There is seltzer on my desk right now.  A bottle of it.  Oh, it may have pretentions and call itself "Sparkling Spring Water", but it's seltzer, alright.

Today the Vixter and her chamber choir have been bussed into the New City of York... first for a lunch at one of Manhatten's "fine dining establishments"  (ok so its Planet Hollywood in Times Square!) and then they are off to see Hairspray

I told the Vixter that Hairspray was written by the actor we saw playing Tevya in Fiddler on The Roof this past Ocotber and that he used to play the mother's role.

"The father played the mother? With that[/b] voice?!"

Last night, DR George wrote:

"Matt, have you ever gone to Exite.com's TV listings?  Click HERE and just enter your zip code, pick your cable option and you're in.  It's only text, so it loads very quickly.  The only problem is that you can't search the listings, but you can see listing up to two weeks in advance.  My computer at work loads much, much, much (that's three muches) more slowly than my computer at home, so I go there, instead."

DR George, you are a life saver and thank you so, so much for this link! I went there after reading your post and got the information I wanted in much faster time than TVGUide.com.  AOL has pop-up blockers, so I wasn't bothered with that either, and it was a great site.

What's more, SUPERNATURAL IS coming on Saturday night on the local WB station (so is GILMORE GIRLS which also got preempted due to Duke basketball though I don't watch GILMORE GIRLS.) So great news, and I thank you so much!

Glad I could help! ;D

We've got a quorum on the forum.  Now if we only had some questions and answers on the forum or, at the very least, some answers and questions.

Okay, here's a question that I think has been answered before, but it's been such a long time that I can't remember:  Who first coined the terms "Hainsie" and "Kimlet" and when/why did this happen?

Where's The Seltzer?

Seltzer boy
Where are you hiding
If you don't come right now
I'm gon' tell you boss on you

Oy.

Don't bring me water
I rather have seltzer
'Cause water don't bubble
And water don't fizz

Water I hate it
'Cause it ain't carbonated
But a glass of seltzer
On the other hand is

Don't bring me Pepsi
Don't bring me a Kool-Aid
Don't bring a malted
And don't bring me champagne

I'll tell you what boy
Bring me one scotch and soda
Then you'll take back the scotch, boy
And leave the 2 cents plain

Seltzer boy
When are you coming?
If don't bring that seltzer
I'm gon' tell Mister Meltzer on you

Seltzer boy
[Seltzer squirting]
That's better, could you put in a little chocolate sauce?

bk - your "Little Red Hat" recording with Miss Juiliana A. Hansen is a fabulous recording for working out!  It's on a playlist that includes many tracks from the Hooked on Classics craze and many upbeat Opera overtures! Just thought I'd share.

I have not seen nor heard this Johnny Weir person, but if he is indeed pretentious and catty...well...a lot of people have had rough lives and not turned out to be unpleasant...just my humble opinion.

I guess I need to see this guy in action. I have yet to watch any of the olympics.

I don't believe anyone ever mean to imply he was unpleasant ... or had an unpleasant personality.

He would be right at home here at HainesHisWay.com, just as many here would be uncomfortable being scrutinized by the media and being chastised for being "ourselves" by some governing federation.

He makes some folks uncomfortable because he isn't reluctant to be who he is and proud of it ... but he certainly isn't unpleasant about it, IMO.  He has been "featured" in various segments of TV figure skating events the past couple of years doing things like "shopping"...and finding things "to die for".

That makes him "unpleasant" to folks who aren't comfortable seeing a man who loves to shop going nuts over something he finds....but it doesn't make him an unpleasant person.

Just my thoughts...based on what I've seen and heard.

SUPERMAN SEASON TWO was filmed at the California Studios.  I think this is the Culver Studios....as DR MATTH said, the same studio where Season One was filmed.  But if the California Studios was something else....it was filmed there.

The link (at least when I clicked on it) to MTI comes up as an error. I went to the Web site and found that their phone lines have been severed. There is construction at the office and somehow the lines got cut. They now have limited phone and internet but not enough, apparently, to let DR Jason post.

Good Afternoon!

About to head to midtown, but before I do...

There have been some interesting articles and analyses of the "straight-washing" as they're calling it of the coverage of Johnny Weir.  Even The Washington Post did a feature article on him, and never mentioned the fact that he is gay, a homosexual.

And whenever Rudy Galindo competed, did the judges ever make any references to his sexual preference?  If they did not, in a way that's good.  However, since he was very out... Just have to wonder what kind of pre-emptive "damage control" the execs at NBC and Olympics are most likely planning.

I, too, spied Mr. Shayne here this morning. I even said hello, virtually. But he didn't post.

I have a couple of friends who worked on cruise ships. They said it was great fun when they were young but living on a ship with no permanent address wears thin after a while. Also, sometimes the necessity of interacting with passengers can be troublesome I am told. Still, I wouldn't mind doing it for a few months as a break from the real world.

Who pays these coaches, like Frank Carroll - who seems to be a bitter old queen.  And what good are they?  And why do some of these guys choose such horrible music and do such silly routines?

I am dumbfounded.

The skaters pay the coaches.  The coaches "coach", like directors "direct"...they are the ones who stay on top of the mindboggling rules and dogmas of the skating federations...the ones who contract for choreographers and consultants on finding the best routines to suit the strengths (and mask the weaknesses) of the skaters.

The music is a collaboration...and taste is everything...and often lacking, admittedly.  Influence can be wielded, of course, from all sorts of people...there are many folks involved in the career of a skater.

Coaches primarily ensure the skaters perform their movements correctly...letting them know what they are doing wrong and how to correct it...during their practices.  They bring in specialists to help skaters overcome stumbling blocks...like when skaters start maturing and find the extra body weight makes doing things they excelled at suddenly very difficult.

Skating is very costly.  Many families sacrifice dearly to keep a skater on ice with a coach, and very often far away from home.  Many get sponsors to offset costs.  It costs hundreds of thousands of dollars EACH YEAR to keep a skater like Michelle Kwan or Johnny Weir on ice.

One of the benefits of the changes in rules (in the mid-1990s) about skaters earning money for endorsements and special appearances is that it enabled skaters to continue skating beyond one appearance at an Olympics.  We used to see skaters for about four years...and then they were gone, whether they won or lost at the Olympics.  Now it's possible for skaters to go to two or three Olympics.

Skaters like Tara Lipinski come along very seldom...she won Gold at age 15 and retired.  She skates professionally, but cannot do much of what she did to earn her gold medal.  Her jumps are severely restricted now because of hip problems.  Sara Hughes wanted an education...and also put on a lot of weight within a year of winning her medal.  She just could not maintain a balance of study/weight/practice to continue as an amateur.

It may seem silly and frivolous...and the coaches may appear to some as "bitter old queens"...but it's a sport that demands dedication and discipline...and not a little talent.

And as for the bad music choices for the figure skating short programs... I believe the new scoring system may be coming into play.  It's all about elements now it seems - even though there is still a an artistic mark - and, I'm guessing that the music choices, at least in the short program, are sort of a secondary consideration.  I'm hoping we'll see more freedom and variety in the Long Programs.

DR WFO has been doing his elusive butterfly routine as well.  He tells me he is still catching up from his winter vacation and has only gotten half way through January.  He doesn't like to post unless he has "caught up"

And I did have to laugh out loud - LOL in internet-speak - when the commentators were exclaiming, "The most points ever scored by an individual in Olympic competition!"

-Well... Isn't this the first Olympics in which the new scoring/points system has been used?

I had a productive lunch. Anthony is not home right now so I went back to the apartment, had a nice crisp apple, a hunk of cheddar cheese, a couple of whole wheat biscuts and some raspberry iced tea. I then walked over to my favorite neighborhood haunt

Academy Records

I must say, I'm not crazy about the Web site. They don't have everything on the floor listed on the Web site and there are minor errors in listings on the Web site (like some film soundtracks listed under musicals, that kind of thing). Also the stuff on the Web site is more expensive than the stuff in the brick and mortar store.

I do like to go there in person because I come across bargins like The Color Purple for only $9.99. My great bargin today is Miss Debbie Shapiro Gravitte's album of music by Alan Menken called Part of Your World. There it was, in shrink wrap (I don't know if it's the original shrink wrap because it's easy to re-shrink wrap something) for only $4.99 It is now in my possession and I will listen to it later today.

Yes...I'm sure he meant under the new system...but, it being "the Olympics" and all...the announcer got carried away.

No one knows what a "perfect" score is...because there is, apparently, no perfect score...anything seems possible since it all depends on what the skater does on ice.

It's ALL very confusing...even to the skaters...

And that's the entire crux of the situation, isn't it.  Whenever Johnny is interviewed about his performance, he talks about his performance.

Whenever they use footage of him talking about anything else, you seldom hear the question that was asked...rather, you hear his reaction to it.  So, if you want to know why Weir would make a comment about how he doesn't care what "those Republican-type people" think about him, you really need to know what the question was...like, "How do you react to those who say your flamboyant style reflects poorly upon the sport of ice skating, or "What would you say to anyone who thinks you might be one of those people who is a proponent of gay marriage?"

I'd consider the statement made a rather cool, reserved response to such a question.  I don't know the question he was asked...but you really should ask yourself what he was asked...and then consider the reason such a question might have been asked.

Everything has a context...and most of these reports skew the context to fit whatever agenda the director or reporter wants it to.

It's sad, but very, very true.

And if you need a bit more evidence of it...consider the CBS Winter coverage in 1994...the year of Harding/Kerrigan...and one Connie Chung landing an interview with Tonya Harding...and having Harding walk off the news set when Chung violated the pre-interview agreement NOT to bring up/ask questions about the incident at Nationals when Kerrigan was assaulted.

Chung forever damaged her credibility that night.  Reporters today have less scruples than she!
