Another (semi) depressing information from the Warner chat: the next Joan Crawford set (which will include FLAMINGO ROAD), won't be released until 2007. Likewise another Errol Flynn set (with GENTLEMEN JIM) won't be arriving until 2007.

I just ordered some fun DVDs of the 1946 movie A Boy, A Girl, and a Dog starring little Sharyn Moffett, and The Old Swimmin' Hole starring Marcia Mae Jones and Jackie Moran. And I also ordered a couple of Akira Ifkube CDs (non-movie music).

I began my afternoon with PIN UP GIRL, one of the more forgettable Betty Grable Fox musicals. Martha Raye gets to croon a couple of numbers in her winning style, but most everyone else is pretty routine. Betty's leading man is the charisma-challenged John Harvey (who?).

Hermes Pan partners Betty in one number, and there is this absolutely endless women's drill team number that ends the picture in what I guess was a patriotic note (since this was made during the war years) but now just drags and drags. I didn't find it a great way to end the picture.

I see what the reviewers have been saying about the transfer. It's not that the color or sharpness is bad, but it varies. Some scenes feature rich hues and are very sharp, but a few others are paler in color that doesn't look much like Technicolor (but naturally has to be) and flesh tones in those are pale indeed.

From there, I went to CARDS ON THE TABLE. I remembered from having read the book some years ago who the murderer was, but it's a pretty nimble mystery for those who aren't familiar with it, and I always enjoy David Suchet's take on Poirot. He's played less an eccentric in this one.

I kind of struck a treasure trove myself today with packages.

BAKER STREET finally arrived, and, ahead of schedule, RENT, KISS OF DEATH (which I had been negligent about buying), BAMBI II, and a book about figure skating.

Very thrilled that these got here even on a week with a Monday holiday. Perhaps I'll stop bad-mouthing them!

There didn't seem to be much talk about MGM musicals during the Warner chat though they did say another Doris Day box was coming with her early Warner musicals in it. Some mention was made of TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY, but we already knew that was coming in their next musical box next month (or is it April?).

The people asking the questions didn't seem to ask about muscials...I think horror/sci-fi/film noir seemed to be there main interests. Howz come, whyizzit that whichever moldy old chestnut Disney is releasing to DVD this month it becomes Disney's "most beloved" classic? This month it's LADY AND THE TRAMP...six weeks ago it was BAMBI.

Yes, there was a passing reference to the possibility of an Andy Hardy set, but nothing about a Mickey-Judy set...which would be as priceless to some of us as the Astaire-Rogers'.

The did say some more musicals are being prepped...but the horro/sci-fi fans seemed to hold sway...lots of titles mentioned that regular folks avoided in droves when the films played the theaters.

Couldn't be that one. Universal owns it, not Warners.

Barrie Maxwell has been a GREAT resource of classic coming attractions for a long time now. He was the first one to tip me off that the Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes films were coming out in remastered versions back several years ago.
