Well, dear readers, we are gathered here today to discuss the power of no power. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, we are here to discuss the power of no power. I remind that yesterday was supposed to be a ME day and I was going to spend it relaxing and watching a movie or two. Well, let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. What am I, Maria von Trapp all of a sudden? I had a somewhat lousy night of sleep – went to bed at two, woke up at five-thirty, was up for two hours, and then slept until one. So, I suppose I managed eight hours of sleep. Once up, I greeted the day (“Hello, day!” I said, groggily), answered e-mails and then ordered a Chinese chicken salad from Stanley’s. It arrived pretty quickly, and I ate the damn thing all up with nary a lettuce leaf left. Nice alliteration. After that, I did some prep work for tonight’s rehearsal. All good. Then, at around four, the lights went out. Say what? I went to the computer and it, of course, was off as was everything else. The fellow in the back house texted me and asked if the power was out and I said yes. Grant Geissman was next door and he confirmed it was out and said he’d heard it was blocks of an outage all the way to Van Nuys Blvd. over a mile away. Supposedly, power was coming back by six. That was truly irritatingly irritating. But what can you do but grin and bare it. So, naturally I grinned and took off my clothes. Then I put them back on because who needs THAT? I also got a text from Spectrum saying the service was down and of course it was for this area with the damn outage. At six, I got another Spectrum text saying power would be coming back at eleven. Of course, it was dark out and pitch black in the home environment, so I lit a few candles I had for some Barry Lyndon-like illumination. I turned on the laptop because its battery was full at 100-percent, but what was the point – I couldn’t get on the Internet, except on my iPhone. With nothing to do, I got in bed and slept for an hour. I got back up, played the piano for a while, started to feel a little nauseous because each candle I’d lit had a different scent and it was driving my throat crazy. Mercifully, as I was twiddling my thumbs, the power finally came back on at nine. I got the computer booted up, reset the clocks in the kitchen, but it was then too late to start watching anything. And as always with the DWP, no explanation was offered. Damn them, damn them all the HELL. I had some chips and a beef stick for a snack and that was that. I was craving a sweet but there was no sweet for a treat. I’m almost tempted to get one now but hopefully sanity will prevail.
And there you had the tale of The Power of No Power, which is a fine tale but not as fine a tale as The Randy Vicar and the Spigot. That one’s a real corker – its original title was too racy for publication, however, because it used the synonym for “spigot,” which is “stopcock.” I kid you not.
Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll eat something very light and airy, I’ll shave and shower, and then I have to be at the theater at 5:30 to do a video for the show. Then we have our rehearsal, which is basically finishing blocking a brief sequence that lead into Today Is a Day for a Band to Play and then I have to stage the two parts of that – it’s a big number with many people, but hopefully I’ll get it done and if I do, we’ll either review or I’ll move on to the final scene of the show and the finale. Then I’ll come home and relax or if I’ve only had a snack during the day, maybe I’ll mosey on over to the Coral Café for a proper meal if I can corral someone into going with me.
Tomorrow, we’ll finish blocking the show. Thursday, we’ll either review or get a jump on assembling act one. Friday we’re off, Saturday we’ll finish assembling the show or get as far as we can, and then next Tuesday we begin run-throughs.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, eat something light, shave and shower, do a video interview, have a rehearsal, maybe go out for a proper meal, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What’s the longest you’ve ever been without power and how did you deal with it? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping there’ll be no repeat performances of The Power of No Power.
