THE BERRIES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to Brahms and Beethoven double concertos – very nice double concertos they are. I, myself, am feeling like a double concerto. I have not a clew as to what that means or what the HELL I’m talking about, so I’ll just move along to the next topic, last night’s rehearsal. It was more of a stumble-through due to many factors. We had Richard Allen at the piano, and he did an amazing job on music he’d neither seen nor heard. Of course, it was rough but more often than not he got right with it, and I know that I and the actors were very grateful to have him there. I began by fixing a step I wasn’t liking in Today Is a Day for a Band to Play – just a simple fix that looks good on everyone. The other one looked fine on certain folks and awkward on others. Anyway, I like the adjusted step much better. We stopped frequently to set who’d be moving the two big rolling three-sided units, and also to let Richard know the tempo of a song. But amazingly, we got through it. People are still struggling with lines, some more than others, but I’m hoping they get them down sooner than later, as it’s very hard to get the pace right, otherwise. But even this rough, you can tell what the flow will be like and how genuinely funny the show is. After we finished, we still had an hour left, so I ran some scenes and numbers, adjusted some blocking, directed a bit, and that was that. I stopped at Gelson’s on the way home – the Studio City version – and they have their good creamy tomato soup in plastic containers, in case you don’t get there in time to get it from the soup bar. So, I bought a container, a small piece of cornbread, some blueberries, some whipped cream and, for today’s food, lox and bagels. Prior to all that, I got ten and a half hours of glorious sleep, which I desperately needed. I’m hoping I’ll have a repeat of that and then I’ll be caught up. Once up, I answered a ton of e-mails, some texts, then had a nice Cobb salad from Stanley’s for food. Then I just relaxed, showered, then moseyed on over to the theater. The rest you know, and I don’t care who knows it. Oh, and it was raining off and on yesterday, so my allergies started acting up at the end of rehearsal.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll eat some lox and bagels for food, I’ll shave and shower, I’ll send the playwright of the show I’m mentoring a final set of act two notes, I’ll stop at the mail place and see what’s what, and then I’ll mosey on over to the theater for our run-through. Back to tracks, but hopefully we can get through the show without stopping. I can tell you, when something is going right, you can feel the entire energy brighten up. After, I’ll come home and watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow is off and I will rest my weary bones, then Saturday evening we’ll do a non-stop run-through with tracks, then Sunday evening we’ll do a rough designer run-through.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, have lox and bagels for food, shave and shower, send notes, stop at the mail place, then have a rehearsal with tracks, then come home and watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite berries and what do you like to do with them – well, we know what one person does with them – The Randy Vicar and the Boys en Berry. Do you eat them just as berries, do you make stuff with them, let’s hear all about the damn berries. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have notes that were the berries.
