JAZZY NOTES WITH A POINT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, having just finished at least pulling the song choices for the show – right now, more than we need, but easy to whittle down. The hard part was just going through everything. I have good choices for everyone – just have to figure out how many duets to do. I think if I have four duets, we’ll be fine in terms of the number of songs. Also, before I go on further, I think I may be leading you in the wrong direction about my conundrum of whether to talk about something or not – it’s not gossip and it’s not dissing anyone, much as there are a couple of folks, I’d love to diss just because they so deserve it. I have learned quickly not to do that in the notes or even in the posts and I think if everyone puts on their thinking caps they’ll figure out why. In any case I’m not listening to music at the moment but maybe I should be. That usually puts me in a good frame of mind, unless, that is, I’m listening to the score to Psycho. No one wants THOSE notes. Okay, I settled on my oft listened to Points on Jazz by Dave Brubeck for two pianos played by Duo Jatekok, which is the most recent recording. While it will never replace the original version by Gold and Fizdale, it’s a good second choice. Hearing Points on Jazz always keeps me on point and jazzy. It’s been a while since I’ve felt jazzy and I’m rarely on point so here we go. I did watch the last of those six giallo movies last night – it was really just a home invasion thing and tiresome as can be, with terrible dialogue, slow pace, lots of people pouring their little hearts out, including the bad guys and I can assure you it has not a single thing to do with giallo films. It’s anti-giallo. It certainly wasn’t helped by being on Tubi (the only one that was), so every seven or eight minutes we were treated to three minutes of commercials. I do believe that’s worse than network TV. Prior to that, I got ten hours of good sleep, got up, answered a bunch of e-mails, did some photo detective work identifying locations, had a Chinese chicken salad for food – very good – and couldn’t finish it – most unusual – had a telephonic conversation, chose a bunch of song possibilities, so now it’s just assigning and whittling down – we’ll do several Charles Strouse songs in tribute – got all the sheet music together, and then finally watched the movie. Whew!

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll start assigning songs and making final decisions on the big batch o’ songs, I’ll eat something or maybe even make some pasta, do a few things that I’ve been putting off, and then at some point watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of that, attending an opening night on Friday, then maybe having a meal out on the weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, assign songs and choose the rest from the list I now have, assign those, get people their music, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: There have been tons of home invasion movies – I’m thinking The Desperate Hours is maybe the first to be a big hit – or were there others before? I know Suddenly is kind of that, but it wasn’t a big hit. But in the last thirty years we’ve had a lot – which are your favorites? I’m fond of Panic Room and a few others. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have written notes with a point and that were jazzy.
